Description

What kind of wine it is

Murgo Etna Rosso is a Sicilian wine that best expresses the characteristics of the Nerello Mascalese grape variety. Ruby red in colour, it offers a bouquet centred on red fruit, enriched with hints of black pepper and cloves. On the palate, it is harmonious, supported by remarkable flavour persistence. Each sip reflects the soul of the volcano, revealing a complexity that is perfect for pairing with grilled meats.

Where it comes from

This wine originates in Santa Venerina, in the Etna region. The vineyards grow on the slopes of the volcano, rooted in soils composed of lava and volcanic sands, elements that impart a distinct minerality and profound savouriness. Murgo has tended these lands with dedication since 1860, enhancing their agricultural uniqueness to convey the authentic energy of the Etna terroir in the glass.

How it is produced

It is made from Nerello Mascalese grapes, cultivated using a trellis system to ensure ideal ripening of the bunches. The vinification process is designed to respect the identity of the variety, preserving the clear savoury signature imparted by the volcano. Thanks to careful management in the cellar, the wine achieves excellent structural elegance and offers an interesting ageing potential for those who appreciate wines that evolve over time.

History and Curiosities

The Murgo Etna Rosso 2023 embodies the essence of the volcanic terroir, the result of the experience of a family who have been cultivating vines on the slopes of the volcano in Santa Venerina since 1860. Made entirely from Nerello Mascalese grapes, this wine offers a savoury and harmonious sip, characterised by a mineral soul that recalls the volcanic sands. The intense aromas of red fruits blend with notes of black pepper and cloves, creating an inviting bouquet. The Murgo cellars were founded in 1860 when Senator Luigi Gravina gave the Scammacca family about 30 hectares of vineyard on Etna where, today, the San Michele estate stands.

Currently the vineyards have an extension of 60 hectares, distributed in the three different estates of San Michele (CT), Gelso Bianco (CT) and La Francescana (RM) and are mostly dedicated to the production of VSQ, Etna Doc and IGT wines. From some grape varieties of French origin, we also get interesting creative wines. The total production of our cellar amounts to 350,000 bottles.

Another 60 hectares are dedicated to the cultivation of olive and citrus trees, from which we obtain our Extra Virgin Olive Oils, Murgo jams and other local quality products.
