Description

What kind of wine it is

Lighea by Donnafugata is a still aromatic white wine with a Controlled Designation of Origin that embodies the authentic essence of Sicily. Produced from Zibibbo grapes fermented in stainless steel, it displays a bright straw yellow hue with greenish highlights. The bouquet is intense, characterised by notes of orange blossom and citrus hints of citron and bergamot, enriched by nuances of exotic fruit. On the palate, the pronounced freshness enhances the floral notes, leading to a pleasant mineral finish ideal for pairing with raw fish and sushi, shellfish, and crisp vegetable tempura.

Where it comes from

This wine originates in Sicily, on the island of Pantelleria, a land that demands absolute dedication through heroic viticulture. The vines are cultivated on terraces protected by dry stone walls, in sandy soils of volcanic origin, deep and rich in minerals. The sunny and constantly breezy climate requires the use of the traditional alberello pantesco, an agricultural practice recognised by UNESCO. This system protects the plants from the wind and encourages the development of intense aromas, which unmistakably evoke the Mediterranean scrubland.

How it is produced

Production begins with meticulous harvesting, carried out between the second half of August and mid-September. To preserve the aromatic richness of the grapes, fermentation in stainless steel takes place at a controlled temperature. This is followed by a targeted maturation in tank lasting two months, essential for harmonising the wine's structure. Finally, a three-month rest in the bottle allows the wine to express a precise aromatic definition and remarkable persistence on the palate.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1983 by the Rallo family, Donnafugata combines oenological excellence with artist-designed labels to convey the profound magic of Sicily. Lighea, created in 1990, pays tribute to the enchanting siren imagined by Tomasi di Lampedusa, depicted in Stefano Vitale's sketch with the delicate colours of dawn. This captivating white wine is born in Pantelleria from heroic viticulture on volcanic terraces, preserving the alberello pantesco, a practice recognised as UNESCO Heritage that bestows an authentic soul upon the glass.
