Description
What kind of wine it is
Sauvignon Prail by Colterenzio is a still white wine from Alto Adige, made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes. It releases clear aromas of elderflower, acacia, hawthorn and sage. The bright yellow colour with greenish highlights anticipates a palate dominated by great freshness and gustatory tension. The finish reveals a persistent mineral aftertaste, ideal for pairing with seafood and asparagus, consistently supported by a vibrant natural acidity.
Where it comes from
This Sauvignon Blanc originates in Prail, near Appiano Monte in Alto Adige. The sloping vineyards, situated between 400 and 500 metres above sea level, benefit from ideal microclimatic conditions for the aromatic ripening of the grapes. The vines sink their roots into calcareous, mineral-rich moraine soils. The work of Colterenzio's winegrowers, combined with strict yields, gives this white wine a pronounced territorial identity.
How it is produced
The vinification process preserves the original aromatic character of the grapes. The must ferments for about fourteen days at a controlled temperature. A portion completes this process in large wooden barrels, while the remainder rests in steel tanks. The batches mature separately on the fine lees for six months, developing volume and flavour stability. They are then blended in a final blend designed to harmonise freshness and softness, creating a perfect organoleptic balance.
History and Curiosities
A sublime expression of Alto Adige DOC, the Sauvignon Prail 2024 from Colterenzio is born at an altitude of 500 metres on moraine soils, thanks to the passion of three hundred winegrowers. Under the guidance of oenologist Martin Lemayr, the must ferments at low temperatures, divided between steel and large wooden vats. A subsequent six-month maturation on the fine lees enriches this elegant white, giving it a vibrant freshness, complex floral aromas and a fine mineral finish capable of enchanting the palate.

It was in the 1980s, South Tyrol was primarily a red-wine region, and the quality was run-of-the-mill. Raifer, a winegrower himself, recognised the potential of South Tyrol as an outstanding winegrowing region: The terroir was cheap, sufficient vineyard area was available and the winegrowers were hard-working and skilled. His first step in his vineyard, "Lafóa", a sunny mountain slope behind the Colterenzio cellar, was to replace the Vernatsch vines with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, and, later, Sauvignon Blanc. He also brought in new quality standards: Lower yield for higher-quality grapes and higher-quality wines. It was on this pilot vineyard slope that, with both Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon, the new quality standard measures were introduced.
This quality philosophy extended its reach to all members of the cooperative: new grape varietals were experimented with, and quality groups created. Today, the members and workers at the cellar are committed to working in line with this model throughout the entire winegrowing area, the cellars and for all wines.
The 300 partner winegrowers of the Colterenzio winery are the backbone of the company. They work year-round on their wine hills with their families in order to supply us with top-quality wine grapes in autumn. Read more
