Description

What kind of wine it is

The Alsace Riesling Cuvée René Dopff by Dopff & Irion is a wine that expresses the vibrant essence of Riesling. It stands out for its distinct mineral character and a taut, fresh, and dry palate. On the nose, it offers a multifaceted bouquet with aromas of lime, apple, and peach, enriched by white flowers, almond, and spicy nuances of grey pepper and turmeric. The greenish-gold colour with silvery highlights anticipates a sip of great aromatic clarity, free from imperfections and with a persistent finish, ideal paired with grilled fish and goat's cheese.

Where it comes from

This wine originates in Alsace, in north-eastern France, from the renowned vineyards on the slopes of Schoenenbourg, located in the Riquewihr area. The hilly terroir presents a unique geological mosaic, characterised by a balanced combination of limestone, clay, and sandstone. It is this complex soil composition that ensures an authentic expression of the land, giving the glass its profound savouriness. This viticultural environment supports a linear and precise flavour profile, reflecting the rigorous style of a historic region dedicated to the production of dry, elegant whites.

How it is produced

Vinification begins with a careful manual harvest, followed by gentle low-pressure pressing to delicately extract the must. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, preserving the original freshness of the fruit. The wine then rests for four months on fine lees, a stage that increases its volume on the palate and prolongs its persistence, without altering its dry profile. The tasting thus reveals a well-defined acidity and flavour notes of green apple, grapefruit, and delicately honeyed hints on the finish.

History and Curiosities

Cuvée René embodies the excellence of Dopff & Irion, a prestigious winery founded in 1945 in Riquewihr. Born from particularly well-suited vineyards on the slopes of Schoenenbourg, this Alsatian Riesling expresses the essence of a unique terroir, characterised by limestone, clay and sandstone. The meticulous manual harvest and four months of ageing on the fine lees enhance its vibrant freshness. On the palate, it reveals a complex minerality, blended with lively notes of apple, peach and grey pepper, offering a persistent sip that is ideal for accompanying white fish, oysters and cheeses.

From this winery
The name Dopff has long been associated with the town of Riquewihr, which is classed one of the most beautiful villages of France. During the Second World War, René Dopff decided to leave home to join the Alsace-Lorraine brigade of the Free French Forces, where he became friends with André Malraux, who was later to become France Minister of Culture under President Charles de Gaulle.

At the end of the war, two of the biggest names in viticulture in Riquewihr, René Dopff and the widow Irion, joined forces to found Dopff & Irion. One of their first decisions was to acquire Riquewihr's historic chateau. René Dopff was an emblematic and prestigious wine producer who, for several decades, had a huge influence on the vineyards of Alsace by putting the emphasis on quality (by reducing yields, for example) and modernising the labels. He was, above all, the first to associate a particular grape variety with a terroir and with specific soils
