Description
What kind of wine it is
Valtellina Superiore Sassella PG40 by La Spia is a still red wine that elegantly expresses the qualities of Nebbiolo, locally known as Chiavennasca. On the nose, it reveals a complex aromatic profile, with intense notes of red fruits, mountain plum and sweet tertiary hints. On the palate, it is deep and structured, unveiling elegant shades of dark chocolate, cherry jam, tobacco, black pepper and hints of tar. It is ideal paired with rich first courses, roast meats, game and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
This elegant red originates from the steep terraces of the Sassella area, in the province of Sondrio, and from neighbouring plots located in Grumello. The vineyards are situated at an altitude between 350 and 400 metres, where the perfect south and south-east exposure ensures constant sunlight. The particular alpine climate encourages the development of grapes with great concentration and elegance, capable of faithfully reflecting the authentic identity of the Valtellina region and the qualities expressed by the selected clones.
How it is produced
Vinification involves a long maceration on the skins, essential for extracting colour and a solid tannic structure. Subsequently, the wine rests for 28 months in oak barrels, a maturation that enhances its aromatic finesse. Boasting an excellent dry extract, it has significant ageing potential, with an estimated evolution between 10 and 15 years. For optimal tasting, it is recommended to decant for one hour and serve at a temperature between 18 and 20°C.
History and Curiosities
Born from the prized vineyards of the Sassella subzone in Sondrio, the Valtellina Superiore PG40 2022 by La Spia is a refined interpretation of pure Nebbiolo. The dedication of oenologist Emil Galimberti is expressed through a long maceration on the skins and a meticulous 28-month maturation in 10-hectolitre oak barrels. Thanks to the southern exposure and altitude of up to 400 metres, the grapes give the wine an excellent evolutionary potential, ensuring a longevity of 10-15 years capable of enhancing the most authentic essence of the territory.

In recent years, La Spia has changed its production rate from just under 5,000 to over 15,000 bottles produced. The company took over small, selected vineyards in neighbouring sub-zones, such as 'Grumello' and 'Valtellina Superiore' in the town of Berbenno. From these vineyards, the increasingly careful selection of Chiavennasca (Nebbiolo) pushed the company to separate the different types of grapes. Read more
