Description

Barolo Riserva Monfortino is a still red wine from the Piedmont region, specifically Monforte d'Alba. The winery that produces it, Giacomo Conterno, boasts a century-old history; its origins date back to 1908, when the Conterno family, repatriated to Italy from Argentina, opened a winery. A fine wine, it became famous first abroad and then in Italy, where it was drunk primarily by doctors and university professors in the cities of Turin and Milan. It has been awarded several vintages as a wine of excellence (including the five bunches of grapes from Bibenda) and has received 100 points from Robert Parker several times. It is only produced in exceptional vintages. What makes it a fine and expensive wine is undoubtedly its longevity (over 25 years), the careful selection of the grapes, and the treatment given to each individual bunch of Nebbiolo. During the harvest, the best parcels of the year are identified and vinified separately, with a five-week maceration period. The wood in which fermentation takes place is of the highest quality; these are truncated cone-shaped vats made of Austrian wood, which guarantees the unaltered quality of the must. The aging period is also long. Before being bottled and enjoyed in all its elegance, the Barolo Riserva Monfortino is usually aged for seven years in Slavonian barrels.

The beginning of the story of Giacomo Conterno winery is conventionally traced in 1908 when Giovanni Conterno and his family (including Giacomo, that is one of three children), returned to Italy after he emigrated to Argentina, they start an inn, producing wine, in the village at San Giuseppe in Monforte d'Alba. Giacomo grows, therefore, between the tavern and the winery until he goes to fight in the First World War as a gunner. Returning home, he devoted himself entirely to the production of wine, bringing it to be sold not only in Piedmont and Liguria, but throughout Italy. Read more
