Description

What kind of wine it is

Eugene Klipfel Alsace Riesling is a still, dry white wine produced by Domaine Klipfel in France. Made exclusively from Riesling grapes, it expresses a fresh style with a semi-aromatic profile and a well-defined mineral character. On the nose, it offers delicate floral notes intertwined with hints of green apple, grapefruit and citrus. On the palate, it is balanced and intense, supported by a lively acidity that balances a slight softness, leading to a long and refreshing finish.

Where it comes from

This wine originates from Barr, in the heart of Alsace. The area's cool climate and the composition of the soils, characterised by a strong presence of schist, give the Riesling a pronounced acidic backbone and remarkable gustatory finesse. These specific pedoclimatic conditions favour a taut and clean expression of the grape variety, enhancing its clear aromas. Domaine Klipfel tends these vineyards, continuing a family history that began in 1824, deeply connected to the vocation of the land.

How it is produced

Production begins with a manual harvest, followed by careful vinification. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, a technical choice essential to preserve the natural aromas and the elegance of the palate. The entire process deliberately avoids the use of barrels to maintain a clear approach, focused on aromatic precision. The wine presents a straw yellow colour with golden highlights, offering a crisp and very clean taste development.

History and Curiosities

Originating from Barr, in the heart of Alsace, this elegant single-variety Riesling embodies a prestigious family heritage dating back to 1824. Domaine Klipfel, renowned for its pioneering role in historic late harvests, showcases all its oenological expertise in the 2023 vintage. The grapes, hand-picked from slate-rich soils, give the wine a vibrant freshness and a refined mineral complexity, authentically celebrating the winemaking tradition of the Alsace AOC denomination.

Martin Klipfel creates the Klipfel Domain in 1824, which is now a family estate covering 40Ha. In 1830 Martin acquires the prestigious Clos Zisser. His son Eugène and grandson Louis Klipfel bring significant growth to the family business.

They were amongst the first to start producing « Vendanges Tardives » (late harvests) and « Sélection de Grains Nobles » (selection of noble grapes) as soon as 1921 on the Clos Zisser and on the Kirchberg of Barr, more than sixty years before the official appellation of these two vineyards. Further developed by André Lorentz (former member of the Académie du vin de France, the renowned Academy of French wines), the family business is today run by Jean-Louis Lorentz-Klipfel as well as by his daughters Anne-Sophie, Marie and Amélie.

Served at 8–12 °C, this vibrant Riesling enhances the flavours of the sea, pairing beautifully with white fish and shellfish. Its mineral notes harmonise with richly flavoured dishes such as sole meunière, coq au vin, or traditional sauerkraut-based recipes. It is also perfect for bringing out the Asian hints of ginger, white asparagus, and a fine Comté cheese.
