Description
What kind of wine it is
Pfefferer Moscato Giallo by Colterenzio is an aromatic white wine made from Moscato Giallo grapes, an authentic expression of the mountainous territory of the Dolomiti Vineyards, with fermentation and ageing in steel. In the glass, it appears light, fresh and lively, revealing an enticing bouquet where the delicacy of fruity and floral aromas intertwines with a distinct spiciness of nutmeg. The palate is dynamic and balanced, led by a pleasant freshness that lingers in a persistent citrusy finish. Its semi-dry profile makes it an ideal companion for fish dishes, sushi, cheeses and ethnic cuisine.
Where it comes from
This Moscato Giallo originates in the picturesque landscape of South Tyrol, specifically in the Appiano area. The vineyards stretch at an altitude between 400 and 450 metres above sea level, immersed in an alpine climate that encourages the development of brilliant acidity and an extremely clean aromatic profile. The vine roots delve into gravelly and sandy soils, natural elements that give the wine a slender and bright texture. The Colterenzio brand brings together the expertise of local winegrowers in an agricultural reality attentive to the protection of the land, applying sustainable practices to convey the region’s authentic mountain vocation into the glass.
How it is produced
The processing of the grapes begins with temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Afterwards, the wine matures through careful ageing on the lees for several months, a crucial technical choice to preserve the clarity of the aromas and enhance its gustatory balance. This method results in a bright straw yellow colour, often enriched by elegant golden highlights. The name Pfefferer comes from the German term for pepper, a tribute to its distinctive spicy aromatic profile that harmoniously blends with its semi-dry nature and vibrant drinking elegance.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1960 in Appiano, the Colterenzio winery is a benchmark in the world of wine. The renowned Pfefferer owes its name to a historic clone of Yellow Muscat, whose grapes take on beautiful golden hues at full ripeness. The term comes from the German word for pepper, a clear tribute to its unmistakable spicy aromatic profile. This label tells the story of the dedication of local winegrowers, united in their efforts to preserve the authentic tradition of Alto Adige.

It was in the 1980s, South Tyrol was primarily a red-wine region, and the quality was run-of-the-mill. Raifer, a winegrower himself, recognised the potential of South Tyrol as an outstanding winegrowing region: The terroir was cheap, sufficient vineyard area was available and the winegrowers were hard-working and skilled. His first step in his vineyard, "Lafóa", a sunny mountain slope behind the Colterenzio cellar, was to replace the Vernatsch vines with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, and, later, Sauvignon Blanc. He also brought in new quality standards: Lower yield for higher-quality grapes and higher-quality wines. It was on this pilot vineyard slope that, with both Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon, the new quality standard measures were introduced.
This quality philosophy extended its reach to all members of the cooperative: new grape varietals were experimented with, and quality groups created. Today, the members and workers at the cellar are committed to working in line with this model throughout the entire winegrowing area, the cellars and for all wines.
The 300 partner winegrowers of the Colterenzio winery are the backbone of the company. They work year-round on their wine hills with their families in order to supply us with top-quality wine grapes in autumn. Read more
