Description

What kind of wine is it

Riesling Alte Rebe from Falkenstein is a still, semi-aromatic white wine that faithfully reflects the character of the Alto Adige Val Venosta region. Made entirely from Riesling grapes, it offers an elegant and distinctly mineral flavour profile. On the nose, it reveals intense aromas of mandarin and citrus, enriched by deep notes of flint. On the palate, it is crisp and pleasantly dry, delivering a lively and balanced sip. Thanks to its vibrant freshness, this wine perfectly enhances dishes based on white fish, delicate meats such as poultry, and platters of flavourful cheeses.

Where does it come from

This white wine originates in the mountainous landscape of the Val Venosta, in Alto Adige. The grapes come from a small plot above the Falkenstein estate, home to the winery's oldest vines, cultivated using a fully organic and sustainable approach. These vineyards are rooted in slate soil, a geological feature that imparts a clear mineral imprint to the wine. The unique characteristics of the region are directly and authentically reflected in the wine's purity and savoury character.

How is it produced

Production begins with fermentation and a ten-month maturation in large acacia wood barrels, chosen to provide structure while preserving the aromas. This is followed by five months of ageing in stainless steel, ideal for maintaining the clarity of the fruity aromas. The process concludes with bottle ageing for eighteen months, a stage that perfectly harmonises freshness and savouriness. This meticulous cellar work ensures the wine has excellent ageing potential, allowing it to evolve elegantly for several years.

History and Curiosities

Born in the splendid Venosta Valley, Falkenstein Riesling Alte Rebe comes from the estate's most historic plot, where the oldest vines, around 30-35 years old, sink their roots into slate-rich soils. The Pratzner family, led by Franz and Magdalena, produces this elegant white wine through meticulous organic and sustainable farming. Since 1995, the winery has expressed the authenticity of the mountain terroir with fermentations in acacia barrels, offering a profound sip with a vibrant mineral imprint of flint and fresh citrus notes.

At the age of 20, Franz put his first wine in the cellar. A fascinating experience that leaves its mark and ignites his inner fire. And the desire to become a wine maker becomes irresistible.

A dream that does not come by chance: it is in fact here that in the past Schiava grapes were pressed for the family Inn. There are mentions of the Falkenstein wine region and the vineyard dating back to the 12th century, and the Pratzner family can celebrate more than two hundred years of existence.

A traditional outlook and attention to detail. These are words full of meaning for the Pratzner family. The constant daily activities are based on manual work, with the machines only there to provide support. Since 2003, all the wines are vinified in the new cellar. White wines age in large acacia wood casks in the cellar carved into the rock.

Wine is the reflection of the winemaker, and of the passion and philosophy with which the vine is treated. At the Falkenstein winery, we want to continue to produce naturally and to respect the environment. We remain faithful to our intergenerational motto: live in close contact with nature and appreciate it, but never underestimate it.
