Areas of cultivation Considerable in all respects a real "wine relic", kept alive by very few producers, the Ionian Manton is a variety diffused solely in Calabria.
History The name Mantonico comes from the Greek "Manteuticos", which means prophetic, to indicate the power of divination that the sweet wine obtained from this vine seemed to confer on those who consumed it. The Mantonico, not to be confused with Montonico, a vine spread predominantly in central Italy, is an ancient cultivated variety in Magna Grecia and subsequently spread over the Ionian coast of Calabria by Greek colonists.
Ampelographic features Leaf: medium or medium-small, pentagonal, with the margin of the lower lateral lobes drawing a single large bow, pentalobata but with lower and lower shallow breasts; Petiole breast V, closed with very superimposed or typically folded edges; Upper, shallow, upper side legs, open, with U-bottom. Fleece of dark green color, with depressions (sometimes strong) at the petiole point, rather moderate moderate bollosity; Contour plan with swaddled edges, green ribs. Medium-short teeth, straight-to-convex margins. Bottom with fluffy flap and ribs without bristles. Bunch. Medium-large, medium-long, conical shape with rounded ends; Often has numerous short wings that, given their marked compactness and short peduncle, tend to become perpendicular to the main axis; The cluster is compact with short peduncle. Acino: medium size, elliptical long with small navel, just in relief. Medium-thick, well-pruned, yellow-greenish skin. Medium texture pulp.
Characteristics of the wine obtained from this grape variety The wine produced with the white mulberry after a brief drying of the grapes is golden or amber yellow, bright, harmonious, semi-sweet or sweet. Slightly aged gets a distinctive aroma of orange blossoms.
Notes Resistance to Diseases: Average sensitivity to mildew and oesophageal disease. In rainy years the cluster is easily subjected to rotting, especially in particularly freshly planted vineyards.
