We can be found in the Collio on the Slovenian border, in an area that has always been particularly suited to high quality wine growing thanks to its favourable geographical position. Protected from the cold north-easterly winds by the Julian Pre-Alps and washed over by the beneficial effects of the Adriatic, the vines enjoy an ideal climate in which to produce the finest grapes. Wines have been produced at the Castello di Spesso since the 16th century: the first document attesting a sale of Ribolla Gialla dates back to 1559, when the Rassauer family lived at the Castle.
The gentle hillside slopes surrounding Castello di Spessa host 25 hectares of estate-owned vineyard, where the most ancient and noble local and international grape varieties are grown: Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Sauvignon, Pinot bianco and Pinot grigio, Pinot nero, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The estate crus originate from the expertly grown and meticulously cared for grapes and are dedicated to the families who have owned the Castello over the years: Segrè, Di Santarosa, Rassauer, Torriani and to its illustrious guest, Giacomo Casanova. The wines stand and age in the original two hundred-year-old cellars hollowed out 18 metres below the Castle, whilst waiting to develop to their true value.
