History The vine Vernaccia di San Gimignano has been present in Tuscany since ancient times. Its origins remain unknown, though some think it is native to the current growing area, namely the province of Siena. In fact, since 1276 it has been mentioned in the municipal archives of S. Gimignano, and the wine of the same name was used for the Commerce also from family patrizie like that of doctors. His name, like the other Vernacci, could come from Latin "ver", Spring, or "vitis vernacula", or "home", as reported by Lucio Giunio Moderato Columella in his work "De re rustica". According to others, the term could be derived more recently and was traced back to the French-born Grenache vine or its Catalan Garnacha synonym. The Vernaccia di San Gimignano shares its name with Vernaccia di Oristano, but the two varieties are absolutely distinct from the ampelographic point of view.
Ampelographic features Leaf: orbicular or pentagonal, of medium size, trilobata, with open petiole breast, but sometimes also with U; Lateral veins above V narrow, with parallel edges; Flap flat or bulky; often; Flat lobby; Corner at the top of the acute terminal lobes; Upper page glabra, dark green, opaque and green ribs; Bottom arachnid side, light green color, with large green ribs, ribs of 1st, 2nd and 3rd order protruding, very pronounced side edges, irregular, concave on the one hand, on the other, convex, broad on the other. Bunch: rather large (length 17-23 cm), semi-compact, elongated, sometimes winged pyramid, mostly with a wing; Visible, herbaceous or semi-legged peduncle, large. Acino: medium size (12-16 mm transverse diameter) almost discoid, regular, medium persistent navel; Pruinous peel, generally of yellowish green, amber in the best exposures, of medium thickness; Juicy flesh, colorless juice of neutral flavor; Medium-long, green pedicels; Green knots; Medium length brush.
Characteristics of the wine obtained from this grape variety The wine obtained from the vernaccia of San Gimignano is of straw yellow color, with its intense and fruity scent, with light almond hints. The taste expresses a good balance, with a medium structure and a pleasant and fresh aromatic persistence.
Notes Resistance to diseases: common vermin pests have a slightly higher resistance than normal.
