Distilleria Bertagnolli

Distilleria Bertagnolli

The award-winning Bertagnolli Distillery is located on the slopes of the Brenta Dolomites - a UNESCO World Heritage Site, immersed in the vineyards of the Piana Rotaliana, a land described by Goethe as "the most beautiful vine-growing garden in Europe" and home to excellent wines and grappas. Since 1870, Bertagnolli has been the oldest family distillery in Trentino: its foundation dates back to when the noblewoman Giulia de Kreutzenberg, a wealthy landowner of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and owner of one of the largest farms in the Piana Rotaliana, married a manager of the Cotonifici di Bolzano, the learned Edoardo Bertagnolli, a descendant of a family of pharmacists. From this union of prosperity and culture, alchemy and viticulture, the Bertagnolli "grappa-makers" dynasty was born. In a short time Bertagnolli became one of the most prestigious companies of the time, becoming a supplier to the Hapsburg Imperial Household in 1886, and collecting prestigious awards on an International scale - the oldest medal dates back to 1872.

The precious legacy of the ancestors was subsequently picked up by the descendants who, continued to run this historic distillery which, using discontinuous copper stills with bain-marie fed by steam, has always specialised in the production of Trentino grappas and distillates, certified and multi-awarded Internationally thanks to their unmistakable quality.

In 1949, Franco and Mario Bertagnolli introduced the 'Colonna Zadra', designed and built by the Trentino artisan branch-maker Tullio Zadra, still in use today: an innovative instrument for the selection and concentration of alcohols that, thanks to a delicate heating process, preserves intact and enhances the flavours and aromas of the original pomace.

Today, the Bertagnolli family is the ambassador of the "culture of distillate": Livia Bertagnolli, former Councillor of the Associazione Donne della Grappa, and Beppe Bertagnolli, past president of the Istituto Tutela Grappa del Trentino, proudly and ambitiously transmit to the world the ancient tradition of this Trentino grappa, noble by birth and aristocratic in taste, characterised by enchanting softness and unmistakable fragrance, with a unique and authentic character like the territory in which it was born.

With a long and significant history behind it, the Bertagnolli family infuses and immense energy every day to continue to make the most Italian of spirits shine in the firmament, which since 1870 has become a symbol of Italian food and wine culture on the tables of the 5 continents.
