Description
What kind of wine it is
Villa Mottura Salento Rosato is a still, dry wine that showcases the excellence of Mottura. It is crafted from a blend of Negroamaro, Malvasia Nera di Brindisi and Malvasia Nera di Lecce grapes, offering an intense sensory profile. Visually, it displays a delicate, bright coral pink hue. The bouquet is fragrant, with clear fruity and floral notes intertwined with pleasant aromatic herb nuances. On the palate, it is lively, savoury and full-bodied, with excellent balance. It is ready to be enjoyed immediately, but its structure also allows it to evolve well with a few years of ageing.
Where it comes from
This rosé originates in Salento, a wine-growing area that includes Campi Salentina and several towns between the provinces of Lecce and Brindisi, in Apulia. The local climate, characterised by mild winters and hot, dry seasons, ensures steady development and optimal ripening of the grapes. The vines are cultivated using the espalier system on calcareous and clay soils, elements that give the wine a pronounced natural savouriness. Careful vineyard management preserves the identity of the region, focusing on low yields and great aromatic concentration.
How it is produced
Production begins with manual harvesting to select the bunches at their ideal ripeness. In the winery, the saignée technique is used with cap raising after about six to eight hours of maceration at controlled temperature. This is followed by static pre-fermentation clarification and a further total maceration of thirty-six hours, finished with a gentle pressing and decanting. The entire process is designed to preserve the integrity and precision of the aromas. Served chilled, it pairs with versatility with Mediterranean cuisine, matching perfectly with delicate soups, shellfish, vegetarian dishes and light meats.
History and Curiosities
Born in the warm lands of Salento IGT, Villa Mottura Rosato embodies the essence of the historic Apulian winery founded in 1927 by Pasquale Mottura. The winery skilfully combines ancient traditions and technological innovation to enhance the value of local grape varieties, cultivated on limestone and clay soils between Lecce and Brindisi. Under the guidance of oenologist Teodosio D’Apolito, these grapes give rise to an authentic local excellence, awarded 85 points by the prestigious Vini di Veronelli guide in 2018.

The Mottura estate is located in Tuglie, a small town in the Southern part of the Salento Peninsula. The building is still the original one, a beautiful late 19th century, Baroque-style farmhouse. Here, the cellars hide the secrets of an ancient family villa and wines age slowly in oak barrels and barriques to develop the aromas, colours and atmosphere of the land.
In almost a century of history Mottura has made great steps forward, changing and growing as wine-making on the Salento peninsula has evolved and changed for the better. As early as the 1940s large iron-ringed barrels of Mottura wines were loaded onto Northbound trains in Tuglie, headed for three plants in Naples, Rome and Milan where the wines of the Salento peninsula were distributed and appreciated. However, the Mottura estate had intentions to go beyond this, and in the ’60s it became one of the first wineries in the area to bottle its own wine. The goal to characterise the Mottura brand was clear from the start: combining big numbers with appreciable, genuine quality.
Perhaps when you’ve been making genuine wines every day for four generations, you’re ready for a new challenge. That of offering even more innovative products of better and better quality while still preserving and revitalising tradition. The result has been new product lines, already known and appreciated the world over. I Classici and Le Pitre are 2 such award-winning lines for Mottura which highlight, in a contemporary way, the potential of local grape varieties, with particular focus on the traditional Salento varieties, such as Negroamaro and Primitivo, cultivating the vines according to the historic technique known as "ad alberello" and preserving traditional wine-making methods.
