Description

The amphitheatre. In the Roero, in Vezza d'Alba, to the left of the Tanaro river, the concave hill of Valmaggiore is one of the best witnesses of origin and quality. As early as the mid-19th century, the Nebbiolo grapes produced in its rows dictated the price for the entire territory. In the 1990s, the encounter with Valmaggiore was like love at first sight for Luciano and Luca. Not only because of the history and the long viticultural tradition, but for the particular uniqueness of its sandy soils combined with the microclimate.

‘Everything by hand. Our Valmaggiore is an amphitheatre facing the sun, with full exposure. It runs from west to east via the south. Here, nature is rich and lush. The soil is soft and sandy, the location extreme. Already in the planting of the vineyard, respect for nature and traditions were strategic, and are so every day when we cultivate row by row by hand, when we harvest the ripest grapes, when the cultivation operations make the vineyard a laboratory of good and original fruit. Nebbiolo in the Roero.

All around is the Roero, an area of impervious hills with great varietal and agronomic richness, not just viticulture. Here Nebbiolo is Elegance! And we, as in the past, convinced and proud, wish to express with our Valmaggiore the grace and refinement of Nebbiolo. Only after years of slow and silent evolution is Nebbiolo known to give its best characters. Our Valmaggiore is also one of the protagonists of the ‘sibi et paucis’ project.

Taste

Taste

On the palate, it shows good balance with firm and refined tannins. Its aromas of white flowers, jasmine and hibiscus give it a je ne sais quoi of exoticism. At times, Nebbiolo's elegance and carat reminds us of certain Pinot Noirs from Burgundy, and this is precisely the case with this Valmaggiore, whose origin enhances this peculiarity.

Luciano Sandrone is one of the leading producers in Barolo. His story is well known: after years of work as a cellarman he purchased his first vineyard on the Cannubi hill. Since their first harvest in 1978, Luciano and his brother Luca have devoted tremendous efforts towards cultivating the finest fruit in their vineyards, which now cover 63 acres in the best parts of Langa and Roero, and to taking extraordinary care in the cellar.

Sandrone’s Barolos are sometimes described as straddling the modern and traditional styles in the region: elegant, attractive and easy to appreciate right from their first years in bottle, but with no less power and structure than traditional Barolos. Along with the extremely low yields in the vineyard, Sandrone has a very rational approach in the cellar. This approach, however, is also unique and outside of simple classification, as Sandrone subjects his wines to a relatively short maceration period, does not use rotary fermenters, and makes limited use of new oak in the maturation process, all signs of a traditional approach in the cellar.

The new winery, built in 1998 at the foot of the steep Cannubi hillside in the heart of the Barolo district, is characterized by the respect for tradition and desire for innovation that also define Sandrone wines.
