Description

What kind of wine it is

GRUSS Crémant d’Alsace Grande Cuvée Brut is a refined sparkling wine that expresses the soul of Alsace through the rigorous Traditional Method. This harmonious blend combines Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay, presenting itself in the glass with a bright straw yellow colour and a fine perlage. The bouquet reveals hints of yellow fruit and white flowers, with fragrant notes of brioche. On the palate, it is fresh, dry and structured, with a persistent finish featuring elegant buttery nuances.

Where it comes from

The roots of this Crémant d’Alsace lie in the territory of Eguisheim, where the Gruss winery cultivates its vineyards using organic farming. The vines grow on limestone soils, nourished with natural compost and without the use of herbicides. This ecosystem is home to plants aged between twenty-eight and thirty-seven years, ideal for imparting a distinct mineral character to the wine. The result is a healthy raw material that translates into a clear profile, capable of reflecting the most authentic characteristics of the region.

How it is produced

Production begins with a manual harvest and gentle pressing, followed by cold settling. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to preserve the aromas, while part of the base wines mature in old oak barrels. The secondary fermentation follows the Traditional Method, with ageing on the lees for twenty-four months. This waiting period gives the wine a complex and balanced texture, perfect for accompanying sophisticated aperitifs, shellfish dishes and delicate pastries with measured sweetness.

History and Curiosities

The Crémant d’Alsace Grande Cuvée Brut from Domaine Gruss & Fils embodies the centuries-old vocation of an estate active in Eguisheim since the 17th century. With full respect for the ecosystem, the grapes are hand-picked from vineyards cultivated without the use of herbicides, thus ensuring an authentic expression of the terroir. This excellence comes to life through the rigorous traditional method, enhanced by the use of old barrels and a patient 24-month maturation, to offer absolute elegance in the glass.

Alsace is a land of truly exceptional and exciting white wines whose fame has been deserved and established for centuries. The Gruss family has been here at least since the 17th century. This is testified by the family's coat of arms, with two keys derived from the name of the old inn located right in the centre of the picturesque village of Eguisheim, which was then bought to make it the family farm. At the beginning of the last century, however, Eugène Gruss began trading in wine and his son Joseph, after the Second World War, decided to buy vineyards to produce and bottle his wine. Then, his son Bernard took charge of the company and expanded it further. Today, the fourth generation with the young André manages the company, who is a very skilled oenologist and has given a crucial managerial turn to the winery in renovating the winery and the equipment while respecting the tradition.

All the vineyards are organically cultivated. The company avoids using weedkillers and employs home-grown compost for fertiliser and grassing in alternating rows. The vineyards have a yield that varies from a minimum of 25 quintals per hectare, for the Grains Nobles selections, to 80 quintals for the grapes destined for sparkling wines. Harvesting is still done strictly by hand. For the rest, only 'common sense': traditional vinification in old oak barrels that were bought by great-grandfather Joseph. There are no hidden secrets for a production that reflects the terroir and grape varieties of Alsace, the result of an interpretation that is attentive to the terroir and faithful to tradition.
