Description

What kind of spirit is this

Liqueur Châtaigne & Cognac de Grande Champagne by Francois Peyrot is a refined French liqueur blending Grande Champagne Cognac with macerated chestnuts. This liqueur reveals a rich brown colour with golden highlights. The nose is subtle yet distinct, offering clear, inviting aromas of candied chestnut. On the palate, it remains fresh and balanced, delivering sweet chestnut flavours that gently fade into a very light woody finish.

Where it comes from

Crafted in Jarnac, in south-west France, this liqueur is rooted in a family history dating back to 1956. Its foundation is Cognac de Grande Champagne, which imparts depth and structure to the spirit. Local distillation expertise perfectly complements the chestnut infusion, creating a regional speciality focused on candied chestnut notes. It reveals a highly balanced profile, uniting the spirit’s character with natural sweetness and restrained oak.

How it is produced

Production begins with a double Charentaise distillation in copper stills to craft the base spirit. The distinct flavour profile develops by macerating chestnuts, smoothly integrating their inherent sweetness and glazed aromas. The blend then rests for at least one year in white oak barrels, rounding out the texture and introducing faint woody nuances. This deliberate maturation yields a consistent, well-integrated liqueur with a deep colour, preserving the freshness of the spirit.

History and Curiosities

Crafted in Jarnac since 1956, François Peyrot’s Chataigne & Cognac de Grande Champagne liqueur honours a rich family heritage. The recipe celebrates the family’s origins by combining their Grande Champagne Cognac—produced via traditional Charentais distillation in copper stills—with macerated chestnuts, reflecting a long-standing artisanal legacy.

From this winery
  • Start up year: 1956
Every day, since 1956, the Cognacs of the Maison François Peyrot have been made with the utmost dedication, the fruit of a 'savoir-faire' handed down from father to son over decades. They are the result of passion, hard work and perseverance. The 25 hectares of vines, where the grapes from which the Cognacs are harvested, are located in the town of Jarnac, in the 'Grande Champagne 1er Cru de Cognac', and are cultivated with respect for the environment, favouring quality over quantity. From the vineyard to the cellar, the step is short. Immersed in the half-light and humidity, the essence of wood impregnated with evaporated alcohol almost seems to be the 'perfume of angels': this is how the mystery is fulfilled, with the birth of unique and inimitable Cognacs, whose fragrances are mastered by the infallible skill of the 'maitre de chai', the cellar master.
