Description

What kind of wine it is

Kaltern's Caldaro Gewurztraminer is a still white wine with a Denomination of Controlled Origin that precisely expresses the aromatic character of Alto Adige. Made from Gewürztraminer grapes and matured in steel, it stands out for its full body and creamy texture that envelops the palate, supported by a pleasant fruity sweetness. The bouquet is clear and varietal, characterised by notes of rose petals, lychee and pineapple, enriched by delicate spicy nuances. On the palate, it is round and velvety, finishing with a long aromatic persistence ideal for accompanying spicy dishes, mature cheeses and shellfish.

Where it comes from

This Gewürztraminer originates in Alto Adige, on the hillside slopes of Caldaro, in an area historically suited to this variety. The vineyards benefit from south and east exposure, at an altitude between 350 and 450 metres, conditions that allow for full ripening of the grapes. The vines sink their roots into well-drained soils, composed of calcareous clay and silty gravel. The soil's ability to retain heat encourages the development of a pronounced aromatic concentration, giving the wine its typical structure and a clear territorial identity.

How it is produced

The process begins with a late harvest of perfectly ripe bunches. After destemming, the must undergoes a cold maceration for twelve hours, essential for gently extracting the aromas from the skins. Following gentle pressing and natural settling, fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature to preserve the grape's primary aromas. The process concludes with maturation in steel on fine lees for three months. This careful management ensures the typical smoothness on the palate and gives the wine an intense straw-yellow colour.

History and Curiosities

The name Gewürztraminer pays tribute to the historical roots of Termeno, a South Tyrolean village where this noble variety has been mentioned since the 14th century. The grape boasts a centuries-old and prestigious tradition in the Alto Adige DOC, a region that enhances its enveloping intensity. The fine wines from the Kaltern winery have always delighted the most discerning palates, to the extent that they were historically served at the Imperial Court of Vienna. A legacy of excellence confirmed over time, as evidenced by the Best Buy award from Wine & Spirits magazine.
