Valpolicella is the DOC red wine produced in the province of Verona. It is a wine that is made from a blend of different grape varieties, the most important of which is Corvina. Also decisive are Rondinella grapes and those from the Forselina, Negrara and Oseleta grape varieties: Corvinone can also be used instead of Corvina. Valpolicella is characterised by a very strong ruby red colour and a pleasant, suave aroma reminiscent of bitter almonds. A Territory of Extraordinary Geographical Variance

The Valpolicella region stretches over a hilly territory bordered to the north by the Veronese Pre-Alps and to the south by the Adige River, extending for approximately 240 square kilometres across 7 municipalities. This land is characterised by vineyards, olive groves, ancient parish churches and Venetian villas, between which flow streams locally known as 'progni'.

Morphological diversity

The northern areas, bordering the Lessini Mountains, have mainly a mountainous topography dedicated to pastures. The central area, traditionally the most suitable for vine cultivation, is characterised by centuries of wine-making activity supported by stone terracing known as'marogne'. Here, in the famous municipalities of Negrar, Marano, Fumane, Sant'Ambrogio and San Pietro in Cariano, Valpolicella Classico Doc is produced. The southern portion of the valley is instead a fertile plain, bordered by the Adige and the city of Verona, ideal for growing vegetables and fruit trees.

Beyond Traditional Boundaries

In addition to the territory just described, comprising the 7 municipalities of Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo, Fumane, Marano, Negrar, Sant'Ambrogio, San Pietro in Cariano and Pescantina, the production of Valpolicella Doc is permitted in a restricted hilly area mainly to the east of the valley, all located in the province of Verona. This includes the Valpantena area and the municipalities of Cerro Veronese, Grezzana, Dolcé, Verona, San Martino, Lavagno, Mezzane, Illasi, Tregnano, Colognola, Cazzano, Tregnago and Montecchia.

A Journey from Ancient Origins to Modern Valpolicella Classico

The potential of this land for the production of red wines dates back to Antiquity. The name itself, perhaps derived from "Vallis polis cellae" in Latin, meaning "valley of the many cellars", confirms its historical and productive importance.

Traces of the Past

Initial settlements date back to the Stone Age, while the Neolithic period saw the formation of the first villages in the hills. The presence of a potentially Etruscan population, the Arusnati, who shared the territory with the Reti, of Germanic origin, before the arrival of the Romans, is also recorded. The term 'Retico' seems to have given rise to the first name of wine speciality of which there is historical evidence: Retico.

Roman and Medieval successes

Rhaetian wine also enjoyed success during Roman times, celebrated by the great Latin authors and even requested by emperors. The medieval era, although lacking significant oenological evidence, probably saw wine growing maintained by the clergy in the numerous piavi and small churches scattered throughout the region.

Modern Revival: Valpolicella Classico

The modern success of Valpolicella Classico began in 1924, with the founding of the first consortium of winegrowers, still active today. The first specification that established the designation dates back to 1968, undergoing modifications over the years. These specifications prescribe the use of Corvina grapes (45%-95%), with the possibility of substitution by Corvinone (up to 50%) and Rondinella (5%-30%). The use of other red grapes is permitted up to 15%. Production involves 17 municipalities in the province of Verona, with two specifications of origin: Valpolicella Doc Classico and Valpantena.

Various Styles: From Fresh to Full-bodied

Depending on the production method, Valpolicella Rosso can take on different characteristics. There are young, fresh versions with a modern character, ideal for aperitifs, vegetables, white meats and even tasty fish.

Full-bodied and Structured Variants

Other full-bodied versions, including Superiore and Ripasso, have a more solid structure. In the case of Ripasso, marc from Recioto or Amarone triggers a second fermentation, giving the wine softness, warmth and roundness.
