Description

What kind of wine it is

The Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett by Willi Schaefer is a still white wine that is semi-aromatic and comes from one of Germany's most renowned areas. Made from Riesling grapes, it stands out for its style focused on freshness and great technical precision. In the glass, it displays a straw yellow colour with greenish highlights, while on the nose it reveals aromas of apricot and white flowers, accompanied by subtle notes of ginger and aromatic herbs. On the palate, it is enveloping and shows a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity, enriched by a refined chalky minerality.

Where it comes from

This wine originates from the famous Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region, specifically from the prestigious Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard. The Willi Schaefer winery carefully manages historic plots that also include the renowned sites of Graacher Domprobst and Graacher Himmelreich. The particular soil and climate conditions of this wine-growing area ensure optimal ripening of the grapes, giving the wine a clear aromatic profile and a deep territorial character, clearly perceptible in every sip.

How it is produced

The winemaking process begins with a spontaneous fermentation triggered by indigenous yeasts. The must is processed in traditional oak barrels, where the subsequent ageing period also takes place. This production choice favours harmony as a whole, allowing the wine to evolve while maintaining its varietal identity intact. The slow passage in wood gives the sip a soft and velvety texture, completed by citrus fragrances, a pleasant juicy sweetness and a vibrant final freshness.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1590, the Willi Schaefer winery is a benchmark for excellence in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region, now run by Willi and Christoph. Among their three hectares cultivated exclusively with Riesling, the renowned Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard stands out, from which this elegant Kabinett 2024 originates, awarded 93 points by Robert Parker. The winemaking process enhances the terroir thanks to the use of indigenous yeasts and slow maturation in traditional 1,000-litre oak barrels, following a centuries-old method that gives the palate a perfect balance between sweetness and vibrant freshness.
