Description

What kind of wine it is

Collio Cabernet Franc by Venica is a still red wine with the Collio designation, produced in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and aged in wooden barrels. It boasts a broad and enveloping profile, fully expressing the unique characteristics of the variety. On the palate, it reveals a rich and full-bodied structure, supported by velvety tannins and a lively freshness that makes it extremely easy to drink. The bouquet stands out for its intense notes of blueberry, blackcurrant and raspberry, which blend with the typical vegetal hints of Cabernet Franc, such as rocket and freshly cut grass. Its elegant complexity makes it the ideal companion for roasts and game, as well as for mature hard cheeses.

Where it comes from

This red originates in the Collio, a renowned hilly area located on Italy’s eastern border, historically dedicated to excellent viticulture. The vineyards managed by Venica are situated in the municipality of Dolegna del Collio, a natural environment that offers ideal conditions to enhance the aromatic profile of the grapes. In this part of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the grape variety acquires a pronounced territorial character, turning its characteristic herbal note into a strength. Meticulous agronomic management allows the most authentic and spicy identity of the grape to emerge.

How it is produced

Vinification begins with an eight-day maceration on the skins at a controlled temperature, aimed at extracting the ruby colour and tannic texture in a balanced way. Subsequently, malolactic fermentation softens the wine’s profile, making the tasting experience more harmonious. Ageing continues for fourteen months in wooden barrels, a fundamental stage that shapes the structure while respecting the original aromatic heritage. This careful process ensures a silky sip and excellent ageing potential, allowing the wine to evolve over time towards refined balsamic notes.

History and Curiosities

Since 1930, Venica has enhanced the value of Collio DOC, presenting with the 2023 vintage a refined single-varietal interpretation of Cabernet Franc. Although it is unusual to find it vinified alone in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, this elegant red transforms its characteristic herbaceous profile into a true asset, overcoming the historical confusion with Carménère. Careful ageing imparts soft tannins and an enveloping sip, ensuring an excellent ageing potential of over ten years, destined to evolve over time towards sophisticated balsamic notes.
