Description
What kind of spirit is this?
Bitter 1850 by Foletto is an amaro liqueur from Trentino-Alto Adige, defined by its herbal and balsamic profile. Crafted through the infusion of twenty-six botanicals, it displays an aromatic character led by fresh citrus notes. The palate is met with a firm bitterness and a structured, tannic finish. Its complex depth makes it an ideal after-dinner digestif, as well as a robust backbone for sophisticated cocktails.
Geographical origin
Hailing from Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy, this liqueur is rooted in local apothecary expertise. Its aromatic profile relies on Alpine raw materials, particularly regional larch bark, alongside various herbs and citrus. Recovered from a forgotten formula within the family’s pharmaceutical archives, the recipe captures the essence of its mountainous surroundings. The result is a precise reflection of meticulous botanical extraction.
Production process
This amaro relies on prolonged infusion times to slowly draw flavour from the botanicals. Through extended maceration, vibrant citrus freshness, green herbal tones, and deep balsamic notes are seamlessly integrated. The process also extracts tannins, which add grip and astringency to the texture. The larch bark imparts a woodland, resinous accent that defines the firm finish. This complex aromatic profile is achieved through controlled extraction.
History and Heritage
Based on a forgotten recipe discovered in the family’s Pharmaceutical Museum, Foletto Bitter 1850 honours the historic Trentino distillery founded in 1850. This spirit embodies generations of apothecary expertise.

The distillery has an ancient tradition combined with a passion for liqueurs, herbs and innovation. The Foletto family has passed on this passion and care over time, ensuring that syrups and liqueurs are produced with the same care and professionalism as centuries ago.
The history of the Foletto family is certainly a captivating one: starting out as a pharmacy and pharmaceutical laboratory, the Foletto family began to expand their business into the production of liqueurs and syrups in the late 1800s.
The Foletto pharmacists have handed down from father to son this passion for truly artisanal things, continuing to produce syrups and liqueurs today with the same care and professionalism that they have done for centuries.
A small exhibition of the equipment used in the early 1900s has been open to the public since 2000 (renovated in August 2011 to include the old premises and furniture of the pharmacy, the original furnishings of which date back about 125 years). Read more
