Description

What kind of spirit is this?

Grappa di Barbera Monriondo by Marolo is a distinguished Italian spirit crafted from Barbera d’Alba pomace in Piedmont. This oak-matured grappa displays a deep amber hue with subtle red reflections, developed by resting in casks previously used for wine. The nose presents an intense bouquet defined by clear notes of vanilla and fruit. On the palate, it is smooth yet expertly structured, offering a full-bodied mouthfeel that leads to a warming and harmonious alcoholic finish.

Where it comes from

Hailing from Piedmont, this spirit is rooted in the Barbera d’Alba area, alongside the Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato hills. Since 1977, Marolo has dedicated itself to capturing the regional varietal heritage through carefully selected raw materials. Sourcing specific Barbera pomace creates a direct link to the historic winemaking practices of the Alba region. These geographic origins provide a distinct character, defined by a recognisable fruit-and-vanilla aromatic signature that authentically reflects the Piedmontese terroir.

How it is produced

The process begins with selected Barbera d’Alba pomace, which is processed using Marolo’s refined distillation techniques. Following this, the spirit undergoes maturation in oak casks, specifically resting in barriques previously used for ageing wine. This essential period develops the amber colour and red highlights while building a structured palate. Bottled at 40% vol, the spirit retains a clean aromatic profile, ensuring a smoothly balanced and enveloping tasting experience.

History and Curiosities

Since 1977, the Marolo Distillery has captured the spirit of the Piedmont territory by distilling grappas from the finest Italian grape varieties, specifically championing the extraordinary varietal heritage of Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato.

Since 1977, Marolo has distilled the spirit of the land. Grappas made from the best Italian vineyards, valorizing the extraordinary varietal heritage of the Langhe, Monferrato and Roero, areas which are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage.

Marolo represents the spirit of the land, the loyalty to its most noble vineyards and the transformation into a grappa that glorifies its natural characteristics. Distillation happens in bain marie disctoninuos stills, one for white and another for red, in small batches over a long period of time so that the original flavours of the grapes can be experienced.

Marolo is based in Alba, the capital of the Langhe, one of the world’s premier winegrowing districts for its diversity of grape varietals and the quality of its wines. The Langhe hills produce some of the finest red wines, such as Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, Dolcetto and Brachetto, but also great whites like Roero Arneis and the aromatic Moscato d’Asti.

Marolo’s grappas are a mirror of the incredible richness and diversity of the territory and viticulture. Not a neutral, standardized, industrial product, but a spirit able to narrate the grape from which it came, to enhance the varietal’s typical aromas, and express a unique, personal character linked to its land of origin.
