Description

The name is derived from the fact that there lived a lady in this chateau in the 14th century. This little lady was very interested in what was going on in the town on Bordeaux and used thus to walk down to the close-by crossing where the stagecoaches stopped on their way coming from Bordeaux. As the lady seemingly often hasted to the coaches, the people of Saint-Emilon called here "la trotte Vielle", the "old trot". This unusual name was used for the chateau already in the 15th century. Trotte Vielle is one of the oldest estates in Saint-Emilon and has some of the oldest vines of Bordeaux as some of there are pre-Phylloxera and thus more than 140 years old.

ChĆ¢teau Trotte Vieille, alternately ChĆ¢teau Trottevieille, is a Bordeaux wine producer from the appellation Saint-Ɖmilion, ranked Premier grand cru classĆ© B in the Classification of Saint-Ɖmilion wine. The estate is located in the Right Bank of France’s Bordeaux wine region in the commune of Saint-Ɖmilion, in the department Gironde.

Situated below Château Troplong Mondot, the name of the estate is suggested to derive from la trotte vieille (English: old trotting lady), invoking a story of an elderly woman who once regularly trotted by nearby roads.

In 1949, Trottevieille was acquired by Marcel Borie, head of the firm Borie-Manoux, who left the estate to his son-in-law Emile CastƩja.

To date the estate is owned by Borie-Manoux, also owners of ChĆ¢teau Batailley and ChĆ¢teau Lynch-Moussas, making it the only Saint-Ɖmilion grand cru owned by a Bordeaux nĆ©gociant. It is currently managed by Philippe CastĆ©ja, with oenologists Gilles Pauquet and Denis Dubourdieu as consultants.
