Selbach-Oster

Our family has been producing wine for 400 years. Our high quality wines are produced from vines grown on steep slopes in harmony with nature that require hours of time-consuming manual work, and it is these values that we strive to preserve.

Selbach-Oster cultivates 24 hectares on some of the best steep slopes of the Mosel: 98% is planted with Riesling, 2% Pinot Blanc. Many of our vineyards are ungrafted, some are up to 100 years old, and these venerable vines produce highly aromatic fruit from small, juicy, thick-skinned berries.

Our focus on quality starts with low yields and meticulous attention to every detail of working the vines, which involves an enormous amount of hard physical labour - particularly on our steep slopes. This is especially true during the harvest, when we pick the grapes by hand in several passes on our steep slopes.

Half of our wines are matured in large, old oak barrels ("Fuder") which do not add any woody taste to the wine, but let it breathe and mature. Depending on what nature gives us, we produce Riesling wines that range from completely dry to sweet dessert wines, from elegant and delicate to rich and complex. No matter what the degree of dryness or sweetness, all our wines display a pristine minerality with relatively little alcohol - the paradigm of the great Mosel Riesling.
