Description

What kind of wine it is

Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore Vumbaca is an organic red wine with an authentic character, a pure expression of the Gaglioppo grape variety. It displays a ruby red colour, releasing intense, fragrant and persistent aromas. On the palate, it reveals good structure and a marked personality, with an interesting potential for ageing over time. It pairs ideally with robust first courses, roasts, game and mature cheeses. It is recommended to serve it between fourteen and sixteen degrees, after decanting for an hour to fully enhance its sensory profile.

Where it comes from

The grapes are grown in the Sant’Anastasia wine-growing area in Cirò, Calabria, at about 110 metres above sea level. The southern exposure and the clay-limestone soil give the wine a solid structural base. Vumbaca carefully cultivates old vines over forty years old, mainly trained using the alberello system at low density. This rigorous agronomic management ensures optimal yields, encouraging the natural concentration of aromas and phenolic compounds within the bunch.

How it is produced

After the manual harvest in crates, carried out between the end of September and the beginning of October, fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature. Maceration for about ten days allows for the extraction of colour and tannic complexity, while preserving clear and fragrant aromas. Ageing takes place in steel tanks for thirteen months, preserving the primary freshness of the fruit. A final rest of two months in the bottle gives the wine its definitive organoleptic balance before release to the market.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 2019, the company Vumbaca enhances the Calabrian spirit by reviving the historic bush-trained vines. This organic wine is produced from old Gaglioppo vineyards located in Sant’Anastasia di Cirò, thanks to a meticulous manual harvest. The careful cold fermentation and the long thirteen-month maturation in steel, combined with bottle ageing, give the palate a good structure and a pronounced personality. The excellence of this production is attested by the prestigious Tre Bicchieri Gambero Rosso award.

The birth of the wines is recent history, but it is the culmination of a long journey that began in 1984, when my mother and uncle bought the first piece of land in the municipality of Cirò, in the Sant'Anastasia district, with an extension of around 6 hectares, 2 of which are vineyards. It is the vineyard I cherish most because it reminds me of my childhood, the carefree years, my mother's youth and my uncle's enthusiasm. This is where it all started.

I haven't come from a family of winemakers for generations, my mother was a teacher, my uncle the secretary of the Liceo Scientifico in Cirò while my grandfather was involved in other things. It was they who passed on to me a love for the land and a hobby that over time turned into a real job and a lot of passion. In addition to the first six hectares of land in Sant'Anastasia, over time the company expanded to the districts of Fedduraro, Frandina and finally Piana di Franze.

Today, Vigneti Vumbaca is based in Cirò and extends over an area of about 13 hectares, of which about six are cultivated as vineyards with spurred cordon and sapling training systems, on partly hilly, medium-textured clayey-sandy and clayey-calcareous soils. All organically managed.

The company takes care of its vineyards by following cultivation traditions and restoring the old vines cultivated using the alberello system (hence the company logo), focusing on native vines such as Gaglioppo and Greco Bianco, with a focus also on Pecorello.
