Description
What kind of wine it is
Villa Mottura Primitivo del Salento, produced by Mottura, is a red wine with Indicazione Geografica Tipica from Apulia, made from Primitivo grapes. Vinified in steel and matured in bottle, it stands out for its balanced flavour profile, characterised by a ruby red colour with purple highlights. The aromatic bouquet reveals enveloping notes of ripe red fruits, cherry, blueberry and aromatic herbs. On the palate, it is full-bodied and velvety, supported by soft tannins and a prolonged persistence that elegantly accompanies roast lamb, red meats and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
The Primitivo grapes come from a certified organic production that enhances the Apulian territory. The vineyards stretch across the municipalities of Tuglie, Cellino San Marco, Campi Salentina, Salice Salentino and Guagnano, on calcareous and clay soils which give the wine a natural concentration. The Mediterranean climate, characterised by mild winters and long dry summers, ensures a regular ripening of the bunches. The vines are trained on a vertical trellis with spur-pruned cordon and Guyot to guarantee an authentic expression of the terroir.
How it is produced
The process begins with a manual harvest of the bunches at full ripeness. This is followed by about ten days of maceration and fermentation in temperature-controlled steel tanks, managed through pumping over and délestage to encourage precise extraction. Excluding the use of wood, Mottura carries out malolactic fermentation in steel. The wine then rests for a short final maturation, preserving its elegant tannic structure and distinctly fruity character.
History and Curiosities
Villa Mottura Primitivo del Salento celebrates four generations of winemaking dedication in Puglia. In the renowned lands between Tuglie and Guagnano, the grapes come from strictly certified organic production and are carefully hand-picked. To preserve their freshness and integrity, vinification takes place entirely in steel with no wood ageing, finishing with 2-3 months of bottle maturation. The 2025 vintage enhances the authentic family tradition, offering a wine that reflects the proud Salento identity.

The Mottura estate is located in Tuglie, a small town in the Southern part of the Salento Peninsula. The building is still the original one, a beautiful late 19th century, Baroque-style farmhouse. Here, the cellars hide the secrets of an ancient family villa and wines age slowly in oak barrels and barriques to develop the aromas, colours and atmosphere of the land.
In almost a century of history Mottura has made great steps forward, changing and growing as wine-making on the Salento peninsula has evolved and changed for the better. As early as the 1940s large iron-ringed barrels of Mottura wines were loaded onto Northbound trains in Tuglie, headed for three plants in Naples, Rome and Milan where the wines of the Salento peninsula were distributed and appreciated. However, the Mottura estate had intentions to go beyond this, and in the ’60s it became one of the first wineries in the area to bottle its own wine. The goal to characterise the Mottura brand was clear from the start: combining big numbers with appreciable, genuine quality.
Perhaps when you’ve been making genuine wines every day for four generations, you’re ready for a new challenge. That of offering even more innovative products of better and better quality while still preserving and revitalising tradition. The result has been new product lines, already known and appreciated the world over. I Classici and Le Pitre are 2 such award-winning lines for Mottura which highlight, in a contemporary way, the potential of local grape varieties, with particular focus on the traditional Salento varieties, such as Negroamaro and Primitivo, cultivating the vines according to the historic technique known as "ad alberello" and preserving traditional wine-making methods.
