Description
What kind of wine it is
The Nobile di Montepulciano from Tenuta Calimaia, produced by Frescobaldi, is a still red wine that embodies the authentic character of Tuscany. This wine is made from Sangiovese grapes to deliver a sip of great structure. Its flavour profile is marked by a full and energetic entry, supported by young and silky tannins. The meticulous ageing in the cellar imparts elegance and good persistence, making it ideal for pairing with game dishes and mature cheeses. Its varietal identity is immediately apparent from the intense ruby red colour, a visual prelude to a deep bouquet.
Where it comes from
The grapes originate from vineyards arranged in a crown on the slopes of Monteliscione, in the historic territory of Montepulciano. The rows are situated at around three hundred metres above sea level, in an area characterised by warm temperatures that favour optimal ripening of the bunches. The soils, poor in organic matter but with a high clay content, give the wine significant structural concentration. This specific terroir allows the Sangiovese to express itself at its best, encouraging a solid tannic structure and a vibrant freshness, both fundamental elements for the wine’s development.
How it is produced
Vinification begins with a spontaneous fermentation carried out by indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled steel tanks. Maceration involves pumping over and délestage to maximise polyphenolic extraction. After malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for twenty-four months in oak barrels, completing the process with a final period of rest. On the nose, clear notes of cherry, morello cherry and black cherry stand out, enriched by hints of sage and lavender. The palate, enlivened by flavours of raspberry and currant, finishes with an embracing spicy finale reminiscent of cocoa bean.
History and Curiosities
Born at 300 metres above sea level on the hills of Monteliscione, this elegant Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG from 2021 embodies the winemaking tradition of Tenuta Calimaia - Frescobaldi. The meticulous care in production is expressed through a spontaneous fermentation in steel, followed by 24 months of ageing in 50 hL oak barrels which enriches its texture. A still red wine of undisputed quality, awarded the prestigious scores of 92/100 by James Suckling and 91/100 by Vinous.

The vineyards, which are arranged in a crown on the Monteliscione hills, are about 300 metres above sea level and are poor in organic matter, therefore particularly suited to the cultivation of Sangiovese (traditionally called "Prugnolo Gentile" in this area).
Nobile di Montepulciano is the flagship wine of Tenuta Calimaia. The high presence of clay and the high temperatures, due to the low altitude, are in fact the perfect conditions for creating a structured and powerful Nobile wine, rich in tannins and very suitable for ageing. Read more
