Description

What kind of wine it is

Sessantanni Rosé by San Marzano is a still rosé wine with Protected Geographical Indication from Salento, authentically expressing the character of Primitivo in Apulia. With its bright pale pink hue, it offers a defined aromatic profile where notes of crisp cherry stand out, accompanied by sweet hints of figs and ripe figs, nuances of blackcurrant and spicy herbs. On the palate, it is enveloping and full, with a rounded structure well balanced by lively freshness and a pleasant savouriness. These characteristics, combined with partial ageing in oak barrels, blend harmoniously, ensuring an intense and persistent sip.

Where it comes from

The grapes are grown in the Manduria area, in Apulia, within the Salento region. The vineyards, trained on trellises at about one hundred metres above sea level, host sixty-year-old vines with a density of 4,500 plants per hectare. The local climate, characterised by high temperatures and medium-low rainfall, ensures constant and regular ripening of the bunches. The sandy soils, porous, of medium texture and rich in stones, guarantee excellent water drainage. This unique terroir imparts its typical dry style to the wine, enhancing the perfect balance between freshness and savouriness.

How it is produced

The manual harvest takes place between the first and second week of September. In the winery, vinification begins with a gentle bleeding and soft pressing in a protected environment, immediately separating the free-run must. The subsequent fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature. Ageing lasts for at least three months and involves resting in steel for most of the wine, while a portion matures in untoasted French oak barrels. This technique preserves the aromatic clarity and imparts smoothness on the palate. To fully appreciate its profile, it is recommended to serve at 10-12 °C, preferably after a brief rest in a decanter.

History and Curiosities

Created to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of Cantine San Marzano, this rosé is a prestigious limited edition released every two years. The result of a delicate saignée of the winery’s iconic red and produced from noble 60-year-old vines, this refined Salento IGP encapsulates the authentic Apulian spirit. The 2025 vintage pays tribute to this invaluable cooperative heritage, winning over critics with 96 points from Luca Maroni and a Gold Medal at Mundus Vini. An exclusive masterpiece, capable of blending deep historicity and absolute elegance in the glass.

In 1962 19 vine growers from San Marzano, whose families had farmed the land for generations, combined their efforts to establish "Cantine San Marzano".

Through the decades this coooperative has grown significantly, attracting over 1,200 vine growers, using modern and technologically advanced plants and producing elegant wines without forgetting the obligation to the very old Apulian wine tradition.

Nowadays the fusion of time honoured tradition, passion and sensibility with contemporary techniques enables us to produce wines with distinctive varietal and regional characters, marvellously reflecting individual attention, seasonal variation and local terroir.
