Description
What kind of wine it is
Salco Vino Nobile di Montepulciano by Salcheto is an organic red wine from Tuscany with a full and concentrated profile. Made from Sangiovese Grosso grapes, specifically the Prugnolo Gentile variety, it reveals a bouquet of violet, red fruits, black spices and ripe morello cherry, enriched by notes of leather and tobacco. On the palate, it expresses a balanced structure where freshness merges with velvety, rounded tannins. The sip evolves elegantly towards a persistent finish, highlighting hints of liquorice and medicinal herbs.
Where it comes from
This Tuscan wine originates in the province of Siena, from estate-owned vineyards located on high hills and from the Poggio Piglia plot. The elevated altitudes encourage the development of a well-structured tannic texture. The name Salco derives from the ancient local term for willow, whose branches were historically used to tie the vines. This choice reflects Salcheto’s production approach, which is deeply focused on sustainability. Careful agricultural management enhances the unique characteristics of the area, delivering an authentic expression of Montepulciano.
How it is produced
The processing of Sangiovese Grosso grapes aims to impart body and complexity. After fermentation, the wine undergoes two years of ageing in wooden barrels, allowing the perfect integration of spicy notes. The process continues with a long period of bottle ageing before release. This slow evolution refines the fruity core and the sweetness of the tannins, creating a balanced structure. The wine stands out for its defined aromatic profile and boasts remarkable ageing potential, making it ideal for cellaring over time.
History and Curiosities
The name Salco comes from the ancient Tuscan term for willow, whose flexible branches were historically used in Montepulciano to tie the vines. This Nobile is produced from a rare clone of Prugnolo Gentile, renowned for its exceptional and complete ripening. Despite the low yields of the 2017 vintage, the cool autumn nights shaped a sublime organic wine, characterised by velvety tannins and a vibrant freshness. Already awarded by critics such as Parker and James Suckling, this wine boasts an ageing potential until 2033.

Salcheto is the name of the stream , which springs at the foot of the town of Montepulciano and winds through a valley where willows abounded. This stream is the boundary of our organic and biodynamic estate, rooted in the historic district of Vino Nobile, in the southeast of the Siena province of Tuscany.
The willow tree, a species that we continue to replant at the winery, also contributes to the winery’s energy independence, is today prominently represented in our logo as part of our commitment to environmental sustainability. Read more
