Description
What kind of olive oil is this
Nocellara del Belice Pitted Olio Extra Vergine d’Oliva by Planeta is an organic extra virgin olive oil with the Sicilia IGP designation. Extracting oil solely from the olive flesh through a destoning process delivers a delicate, almost sweet profile. It balances acidity with a round texture, finishing with a faint sea-salt note. The vivid green hue reveals fresh aromas of basil, green citrus and bergamot. This clean character beautifully enhances raw dishes, making it an ideal finish for line-caught fish, shellfish and lightly steamed vegetables.
Where it comes from
This oil originates from the Capparrina estate in Menfi, situated within Agrigento. The groves thrive in a protected coastal landscape where olive trees naturally coexist with diverse flora and fauna. Governed by a warm Mediterranean climate, this environment allows the native Nocellara del Belice olives to develop their signature herbal and citrus characteristics. This origin is firmly rooted in the regional soils of Sicily, ensuring an agricultural approach that respects the local ecosystem and natural biodiversity.
How it is produced
The olives are handpicked during an early harvest to capture their peak vitality and are processed immediately at the on-site mill. Following a gentle wash, the fruit is meticulously destoned so that only the pure olive flesh is crushed. This selective milling creates a fine paste, which is processed through a continuous cold extraction cycle using a modern two-phase decanter. To preserve the natural sweetness, the oil undergoes no further centrifugation. This careful method ensures maximum freshness, yielding a clean and defined flavour profile. It should be stored in a dry place away from light and heat.
History and Tradition
Drawing on seventeen generations of Sicilian heritage, Planeta has been cultivating its legacy since 1995. The olive trees thrive in a safeguarded Mediterranean site where they coexist with diverse flora and fauna across 371 hectares of land. An interesting fact about this production is its environmental awareness, marked by a carbon footprint of 163 g CO2e per 100 g—equivalent to driving just 0.8 km in a petrol car. Today, the producer achieves an impressive overall yield of 2,500,000 bottles, continuing a long-standing historical tradition in the region.
