Description

What kind of wine it is

Paolo Conterno Barolo Ginestra is a still red wine that expresses the most authentic soul of the Barolo denomination, made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes. To the eye, it presents an elegant ruby red colour, enriched by characteristic orange reflections. The aromatic bouquet is broad and persistent, with hints of ripe fruit, blackberry and black cherry, perfectly intertwined with fine spicy notes. On the palate, it is warm and enveloping, supported by a soft structure and remarkable persistence of flavour. Thanks to its extraordinary longevity, it can evolve positively for over a decade; it is recommended to decant it for an hour before serving to appreciate every nuance, pairing it with elaborate first courses, pork, game or mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

This wine is born in the heart of the renowned Cru Ginestra, located in the municipality of Monforte d’Alba, in a particularly suited area of Piedmont. The vines are cultivated using the Guyot espalier system, with low yields to obtain grapes of the highest quality. The Paolo Conterno winery, run by the same family since 1886, tends these vineyards with dedication passed down through four generations. The connection with the Piedmontese terroir emerges in careful management, capable of enhancing the identity of the variety.

How it is produced

The vinification process begins with maceration and fermentation in stainless steel for a period of ten to twelve days, ensuring precise extraction of colour and aromas. Subsequently, the wine matures for two years in French oak barrels, completing its ageing with a further year of rest. Following the philosophy of oenologist Giorgio Conterno, the wine is not filtered: this choice allows the substance and complexity of the sensory profile to remain intact. The result is an unfiltered wine, with a frank character and imposing structure, fully respectful of its identity and denomination.

History and Curiosities

Born in the prestigious Cru Ginestra of Monforte d’Alba, this superb wine embodies the passion of the Paolo Conterno winery, founded in 1886. Under the guidance of the fourth generation of the family, the Barolo DOCG rests for two years in large French oak barrels and matures for twelve months in the bottle, ensuring exceptional longevity. Bottled without filtration to preserve its essence, the 2021 vintage offers a warm and enveloping palate, celebrated with a score of 95/100 by Wine Spectator as an authentic expression of Piedmontese excellence.

Our family has been dedicated to viticulture for four generations. My great-grandfather Paolo started this activity in 1886, which then passed on to my grandfather Carlo. Today the owner of the estate is my father, Paolo, helped by my mother, Caterina, my sister Marisa and me, Giorgio.

As in the past, each one of us today contributes to the cultivation of the vineyards with great care and commitment. In the past people made use of the few means they had, of manual labour, perseverance and stubbornness. Modern technology helps to save much hard work, and with the experience accumulated over the years, it is possible to do things better and gain great satisfaction and new incentives from our work.
