Description

What kind of wine it is

Valtellina Sfursat Cinquestelle by Nino Negri is a red wine with Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin from Lombardy, boasting great character, made from Nebbiolo grapes, locally known as Chiavennasca. This wine is the result of careful natural drying, which gives it a rich profile and remarkable structure. On the palate, it is intense, with ripe tannins and a very persistent finish, supported by expert ageing in wood. A vigorous and profound wine, perfect for those seeking a product capable of evolving over time.

Where it comes from

Production takes place in Lombardy, on the slopes of the Rhaetian Alps along the right bank of the Adda river. The vineyards are located in the areas of Rosso di Valtellina and Valtellina Superiore, including the renowned subzones Inferno, Grumello and Fracia. Situated on south-facing terraces between 300 and 550 metres above sea level, the vines are a prime example of heroic viticulture. The sandy-silty soils, which are shallow, give the wine a pronounced concentration, combining structural strength with vibrant mineral freshness.

How it is produced

After manual harvesting, the bunches undergo a natural drying process in a drying room for about three months. Towards the end of November, the grapes are pressed and vinification begins, which includes a brief cryo-maceration to enhance the aromatic profile. Maturation lasts a total of two years, with twenty months spent in French oak barrels from Allier and Nevers. Finally, the final blend is created, which rests for a further six months to achieve perfect flavour harmony before being released to the market.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1897, the Nino Negri winery embodies the excellence of heroic viticulture in Valtellina. In 1956, it was a pioneer in the production of Sfursat through the meticulous natural drying of Nebbiolo grapes. The renowned 5 Stelle, the winery's flagship, is produced exclusively in years with optimal climatic conditions to ensure absolute quality. This wine has been awarded the 3 Bicchieri Gambero Rosso.
