Description
What kind of wine it is
Los Vascos Cabernet Sauvignon is a still red wine that purely expresses the Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety. In the glass, it displays a brilliant ruby red colour, heralding a bouquet of cherry, strawberry and plum, interwoven with hints of thyme, bay leaf, mint and spicy notes. On the palate, it reveals a full-bodied and fresh structure, with soft, well-defined tannins and a pleasant acidity. Perfectly balanced, it pairs well with roast meats, guinea fowl and cheeses, offering its best expression when decanted and served at the ideal temperature.
Where it comes from
This wine originates in Chile, in the Colchagua region, within the vineyards of the Los Vascos estate. The ungrafted vines grow at one hundred and thirty metres above sea level on semi-arid soils with strong sun exposure. The location, about forty kilometres from the Pacific Ocean, ensures a favourable microclimate characterised by low rainfall and moderate temperatures. These environmental conditions, combined with careful water management, allow the grapes to ripen regularly, giving the wine a pronounced aromatic definition and a solid structural framework.
How it is produced
Production begins with a careful harvest of the Cabernet Sauvignon between the end of March and May. In the winery, the bunches undergo vinification in steel, carried out in dedicated tanks to preserve the integrity of the fruit and the freshness of the aromas. Subsequently, the wine rests through maturation in barrels, a technical choice that refines its profile and gives roundness to the palate. This oenological approach enhances the vocation of the terroir, ensuring excellent evolution over time with a solid prospect for medium ageing.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1981 and led by the renowned Rothschild family since 1988, Viña Los Vascos has elevated the Colchagua Valley to a position of absolute prestige. This Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from ungrafted vines grown forty kilometres from the Pacific Ocean, benefitting from an ideal microclimate. The 2022 vintage, despite low rainfall, enjoyed optimal weather conditions that ensured excellent grapes. This extraordinary regional vocation gives rise to a structured and harmonious red, awarded an impressive 90 points by James Suckling, Vinous and Wine Spectator.

The pioneer ambition of DBR in Chile is the result of extensive research on the potential of local wines. Many properties were visited and many wines tasted before choosing Los Vascos because of its location near the ocean and its fabulous soil. Along with ideal weather conditions, Los Vascos benefits from intense exposure to the sun, adequate water sources, semi-arid soils, and little risk of frost. At 130 metres average elevation and just 40 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, the microclimate of Viña Los Vascos has the perfect formula for producing fine wines.
Gilbert Rokvam, Château Lafite Rothschild Technical Director from 1983 to 1994, directed vineyard restructuring and a replanting program. Water sources are secured through drillings, and a weather monitoring station was installed in the vineyards. The bodega was enlarged and modernized through several steps, in order to provide for new requirements in winemaking and in ageing (stainless steel tanks, pneumatic presses and barrel chais). Work in the vineyard and in the cellar was also conducted to enhance quality, and new local management was implemented under the supervision of Claudio Naranjo. Los Vascos now features a 560-ha vineyard in the heart of a 3,600-ha hacienda. It is one of the country’s largest single vineyards. Read more
