Description

What kind of wine it is

Barolo Fontanin by Livia Fontana is a still red wine made entirely from Nebbiolo grapes, originating from the hills of Piedmont. This authentic expression boasts the prestigious Barolo designation, standing out for its robust body and long evolutionary potential. The aromatic profile offers notes of macerated violet, liquorice and nutmeg, while on the palate, elegant tannins support an imposing structure. Vinification in steel tanks is followed by long ageing in wooden barrels.

Where it comes from

This Barolo originates from vineyards located in Castiglione Falletto, a prime terroir in the heart of Piedmont. The vines grow at an altitude of between 300 and 350 metres above sea level, benefiting from a microclimate ideal for ripening Nebbiolo. The soil is characterised by Sant’Agata Fossili Marls, enriched by a significant presence of sand. This particular geological composition gives the wine extraordinary aromatic finesse, while the altitude ensures optimal ripening, fundamental for the development of deep taste persistence.

How it is produced

Production begins in mid-October with a manual harvest, followed by careful berry selection on a vibrating table and soft pressing. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, accompanied by maceration for about twenty days, during which pump-overs and délestage are carried out. Subsequently, the wine undergoes slow maturation for 30-40 months in traditional oak barrels. The process concludes with a further period of rest in the bottle within the underground cellar at controlled temperature and humidity, forging the wine's imposing structure and elegant texture.

History and curiosities

Livia Fontana's Barolo Fontanin 2022 represents a historic excellence rooted in Castiglione Falletto. A fascinating peculiarity of this artisanal label lies in the traditional bottle with the "Albeisa" engraving on the neck, an unmistakable tribute to the classic Piedmontese style. The famous Luigi Veronelli described this masterpiece as an excellent, exhilarating and admirable wine. After a careful rest in the silence of an underground cellar, its prestige is celebrated by 94 James Suckling points and the prestigious 4 Vitae AIS Vines.
