Tenuta Guado al Tasso is located in the small but prestigious Bolgheri DOC, on the coast of upper Maremma, about one hundred kilometers southwest from Florence. This appellation has a relatively recent history, DOC Bolgheri was approved in 1994 and since then it has become an internationally recognized reference point for the Italian and international winemaking arena. The estate covers an area of about 320 hectares (790 acres) planted with vines, set in a beautiful plain encircled by rolling hillsides known as the "Bolgheri Amphitheatre" due to its particular shape.

The noble Della Gherardesca family began practicing viticulture in the late 1600’s on their land in Bolgheri, but things really began to change under the guidance of Guido Alberto Della Gherardesca (1780-1854). He was a passionate about viticulture. He was appointed majordomo of Grand Duke Leopold II and then dedicated himself to enology in his family’s land in Maremma. In the 1930’s, the property was inherited by Carlotta Della Gherardesca Antinori (Piero Antinori’s mother) and her sister who was married to Mario Incisa Della Rocchetta (who received the nearby Tenuta San Guido).

Story Tenuta Guado al Tasso is about 80 km south-west of Florence, near the medieval village of Bolgheri, in Maremma. The 1,000-hectare estate stretches from the Tyrrhenian coast to the hills: in addition to vineyards, crops include wheat, corn, sunflowers and olives. The vineyards are located at an altitude between 45 and 60 metres above sea level on rocky, slightly calcareous soils. Guado al Tasso was produced for the first time in 1990.
Origin Tenuta Guado al Tasso is located near Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast, 96 km south-west of Florence. The Tenuta's 300 hectares of vineyards are located in the centre of the so-called 'Bolgheri amphitheatre': gentle hills surround a splendid plain sloping down to the sea, creating a microclimate with unique characteristics. Guado al Tasso, the estate's 'flagship' wine, expresses all the strength and softness of this strip of Maremma. It has contributed to elevating the Bolgheri area among the most important areas in European oenology, expressing a distinctly Mediterranean character of power, elegance and balance.
Climate Vintage characterised by a cool July and a warm early spring, with above average temperatures. Sprouting occurred slightly early but with good uniformity. A regular spring and a summer that, until early August, was cool and characterised by some rain, favoured a long and stress-free vegetative cycle. The heat at the end of August, although mitigated by the influence of the sea, caused some irregularity and variability in the ripening times as well as a slight drop in production. September was milder, with some sporadic rainfall that allowed the Cabernet Franc to complete its final ripening cycle in a uniform manner, guaranteeing exceptional concentration of flavour and tannins.
Harvest The grapes were harvested by hand, then transferred to the cellar in 15kg crates where they were sorted, before and after destemming.
Production technique Soft crushing and cold pre-maceration (10°C) in stainless steel tanks for five days, followed by the start of alcoholic fermentation with temperatures progressively rising to 25°C. Maceration also continued after fermentation for a total of 30 days.
Wine making The wine was placed in French oak barrels (100% new) of various origins where it completed malolactic fermentation by the end of the year.
Aging Extended ageing for 18 months, during which each barrel was individually controlled and monitored. At the end of maturing, it was decided to bottle only those barrels identified as best integrating with the wine.
