Description

What kind of wine it is

Vigna Ganger Pinot Noir Riserva Mazon is a still red wine produced by Girlan in Alto Adige, a pure and structured expression of Pinot Noir. It displays an intense ruby red colour, revealing elegant aromas of cherry, morello cherry, raspberries and a distinctive hint of marzipan. On the palate, it is persistent, driven by a pleasant freshness and soft tannins that balance the structure, enriched by refined spicy notes. Thanks to this solid flavour profile, it stands out for its remarkable ageing potential, allowing it to evolve beautifully in the bottle over the years.

Where it comes from

The grapes are grown in Mazzon, a winegrowing area where the monopole vineyard Vigna Ganger is located, characterised by a microclimate ideal for grape ripening. The vines grow at an altitude between 360 and 380 metres above sea level, on a gentle slope facing south-west. The deep soils, with clay on the surface and a solid limestone substrate, give the wine aromatic finesse and structural vigour. Through strictly limited yields, Girlan's meticulous work focuses on the vocation of this cru, enhancing the authentic winegrowing identity of Alto Adige.

How it is produced

Production begins in mid-September with the manual harvest of fully ripe grapes. In the winery, part of the batch is vinified with whole bunches, then the crushed grapes are transferred by gravity into stainless steel tanks. Here, alcoholic fermentation takes place for about twenty-five days, followed by the completion of malolactic fermentation. Ageing involves twenty months in barrels, followed by a further eighteen months resting in the bottle, a crucial period for consolidating the great harmony of the sensory profile.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1923, the Girlan winery has pursued the excellence of Alto Adige DOC through a meticulous project launched in 2008. At the heart of this endeavour is Vigna Ganger, a monopole vineyard located in Mazzon, characterised by a unique microclimate and clay-limestone soils. Thanks to exclusive yields of only 2,400 kg/ha, oenologist Gerhard Kofler crafts a Pinot Noir Riserva of rare elegance and harmony. The 2021 vintage, awarded 96 points by James Suckling, offers velvety tannins and exceptional ageing potential, celebrating an authentic and unparalleled terroir.

Cantina Girlan was founded in 1923 in an ancient farmstead from the 16th century. Back then 24 winegrowers laid the foundation stones of what was later to become the winery we see today. The walls, steeped in ancient tradition, and the labyrinthine corridors of the cellar harbour the secrets of state-of-the-art winemaking technology and hold the ideal conditions for ageing our wines.

Today, about 200 greatly committed and motivated winegrowers and their families farm an area covering about 230 hectares of vineyards in the best production areas of Oltradige and Bassa Atesina. Our enologist, Gerhard Kofler, keeps in close personal contact with the winegrowers and provides his professional advice during the growing season. This beneficial exchange of expertise sets the foundations for producing highest quality wines. The wines are among the most awarded in the region and available in more than 40 countries worldwide.
