Description

What kind of wine it is

Giovanni Rosso Barbera d’Alba is a still red wine from Piedmont that faithfully reflects the essence of Barbera d’Alba. Made entirely from Barbera grapes, it offers an aromatic profile characterised by notes of plum, raspberry, blueberry and delicate hints of wisteria. On the palate, it stands out for its smooth structure and vibrant acidity, providing a harmonious taste that is ideal paired with cured meats, fresh cheeses and risottos.

Where it comes from

This wine originates in Piedmont, from the Giovanni Rosso vineyards located in the Baudana hamlet of Serralunga d’Alba. To enhance the natural vocation of these lands, the winery adopts organic and sustainable practices. The meticulous management of the rows, trained using the Guyot system, aims to preserve the integrity of the local ecosystem, allowing the terroir of origin to express itself with absolute clarity in the glass.

How it is produced

Harvesting takes place between the beginning and the middle of October. Subsequently, fermentation in steel lasts about ten to fifteen days, with daily pump-overs and a délestage halfway through to optimise extraction. Maturation continues for several months in French oak barrels, giving the wine balance and stability. The result is a red wine characterised by marked freshness and perfectly balanced taste and aroma sensations.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1960 in the hamlet of Baudana in Serralunga d’Alba, the family-run Giovanni Rosso winery adopts organic and sustainable practices to enhance the local area. Oenologist Davide Rosso manages nine hectares of vineyards trained using the Guyot method, harvested in October to capture the essence of Piedmont in 55,000 bottles. This Barbera d’Alba DOC is a testament to a deep commitment to quality, already recognised with the 3 red stars from Veronelli. An Italian excellence with an ageing potential of 5-10 years, perfect for enriching your collection.

Welcome to Azienda Agricola Giovanni Rosso. We are a small, family-owned producer in the heart of the Barolo commune of Serralunga d'Alba. We make only red wines, and our passion is for Barolo and its great grape, Nebbiolo. We hope you enjoy our website and even more importantly, our wines. Since the 1890's the Rosso family has farmed vineyards in Serralunga d'Alba, notably the Crus of Cerretta, La Serra, Broglio, Meriame, Sorano, Costa Bella, Lirano & Damiano. During the early 1980's Giovanni Rosso restructured the vineyards with the aim of growing the best fruit.

Giovanni's son, Davide, studied Oenology and gained invaluable experience in France. In 2001 Davide, then 27 years old, took charge of the vinification & affinamento/elevage of the wines with one goal in mind: "Wine should be a perfect copy of its terroir"... in this case from the slopes of Serralunga d'Alba, among the finest soils in the world.

The Giovanni Rosso cantina (winery) is located in the hamlet of Baudana, just a couple of kilometres north of Serralunga d'Alba village. A traditional family cascina, or farmhouse, it houses the fermentation, ageing, bottling and labeling facilities as well as the offices.

Davide Rosso has been looking for many years for a new terroir where he could face a new challenge himself. The side-project was officially born in May 2016 with the purchase of the Etna estate near the village Solicchiata of Castiglione di Sicilia. The farm rises a few kilometers before Passopisciaro down to Montedolce, a small inactive crater that gives the name to the Contrada. We are in the northeast side of the volcano, a perfectly suited area for the production of red wines. The new holdings extend for fourteen hectares in one single plot among which just something more than six hectares are dedicated to viticulture: 1.2 ha for the whites and 5.5 ha for the reds (Carricante and Nerello Mascalese with small percentages of other local grape varieties, as the tradition requires). The training system has been renamed as "candelabro".
