Description

What kind of wine it is

Barolo Riserva Monfortino by Giacomo Conterno is a red wine with a structured profile, an authentic expression of the Nebbiolo grape variety. On the nose, it offers a clear aromatic sequence, where blackberry and cherry in spirit blend with notes of mushrooms, truffle, leather and liquorice. The palate is enveloping, guided by silky tannins and supported by a marked minerality that prolongs its persistence. Designed to evolve over time, it guarantees a longevity of over twenty-five years, presenting itself as a rigorous interpretation of Barolo Riserva.

Where it comes from

The roots of this wine lie in Piedmont, among the slopes of Monforte d’Alba. The story of Giacomo Conterno began in 1908, distinguished by a profound knowledge of the land. Production comes from careful work in the vineyard, aimed at identifying the best plots, vinified separately to enhance the identity of each individual parcel. This precise interpretation of the soil is reflected in a ruby red colour with garnet highlights, making the glass ideal for accompanying game and mature cheeses.

How it is produced

Produced only in the most favourable vintages, the must undergoes a five-week maceration on the skins without temperature control. Fermentation takes place in truncated conical vats made of Austrian wood, encouraging the natural development of the mass. Before bottling, the wine requires ageing for at least seven years in large Slavonian oak barrels, an essential step to refine its structure. To fully appreciate its potential, it is recommended to decant for one hour and serve between eighteen and twenty degrees Celsius.

History and Curiosities

Born in 1908 from the intuition of the Conterno family, this renowned wine, once labelled as “Extra Barolo”, was among the most sought-after by the intellectual elite of the time. Today, Barolo Riserva Monfortino is created from the selection of the finest grapes from the most prestigious vineyards, produced exclusively in exceptional vintages to ensure unparalleled longevity. This excellence, with 70,000 bottles, places this wine at the top of the world rankings, confirmed by the Cinque Grappoli Bibenda and 100 points from Robert Parker and Decanter.

The beginning of the story of Giacomo Conterno winery is conventionally traced in 1908 when Giovanni Conterno and his family (including Giacomo, that is one of three children), returned to Italy after he emigrated to Argentina, they start an inn, producing wine, in the village at San Giuseppe in Monforte d'Alba. Giacomo grows, therefore, between the tavern and the winery until he goes to fight in the First World War as a gunner. Returning home, he devoted himself entirely to the production of wine, bringing it to be sold not only in Piedmont and Liguria, but throughout Italy. Read more
