Description

What kind of wine it is

The Syrah Case Via from Fontodi is a still red wine of great concentration, characterised by a deep and dense ruby hue. On the nose, it reveals intense notes of dried plums, black cherries, mocha, camphor and moss, combined with fresh balsamic hints. On the palate, this Syrah offers a soft entry, promptly supported by a lively phenolic mass and well-integrated acidity. The firm, mature tannins accompany the sip towards an elegant finish, making it ideal for pairing with grilled meats, game and aged cheeses.

Where it comes from

The grapes grow in the heart of Chianti, in the Case Via and Pecille vineyards in Panzano, benefiting from an optimal southern exposure for the expression of the Colli Toscana Centrale denomination. Fontodi adopts a strictly organic approach: thanks to sustainable farming practices, the use of synthetic chemicals is completely excluded in favour of estate compost, thus preserving the environment and the vitality of the soil to honour the authenticity of the Tuscan territory.

How it is produced

After meticulous hand harvesting, spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature. Maceration on the skins continues for at least three weeks, with regular punch-downs. The subsequent malolactic fermentation takes place in wood, followed by twelve months of ageing in French oak barrels from the Tronçais and Allier forests. The process ends with a further period of rest, aimed at consolidating the wine's powerful structure and classic profile.

History and Curiosities

The excellence of the Fontodi winery is expressed in the Syrah Case Via Toscana IGT 2021, an organic wine born from the historic vineyards of Panzano. This exclusive production of only 5,000 bottles, overseen by oenologist Franco Bernabei, enhances the precious terroir through spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Its captivating complexity and vibrant smoothness derive from a three-week maceration and an elegant 12-month maturation in French barriques, extraordinary qualities that have earned it the exceptional score of 93 points from Wine Spectator.

Fontodi has belonged to the Manetti family since 1968, which for centuries has been dedicated to another typically Chianti activity: the production of the famous terracotta. Precisely in the name of this strong bond with the land and with a great passion for quality, the company has successfully turned towards increasingly careful cultivation of the vineyards and a deeper knowledge of the potential of Sangiovese in the Panzano area.

Fontodi is a certified organic farm and covers 170 hectares, of which more than 80 are planted with vines. The principles of naturalness and sustainability inspire the agriculture that is practised: not only are no synthetic chemical products used, but an attempt is made to make the most of the company's internal resources by reducing external inputs. For example, the vineyards are fertilised using compost produced by combining pruning residues and manure from the farm's own Chianina breeding. Respecting the environment produces better, cleaner wines with a better expression of the terroir.
