Description

What kind of wine it is

Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino Colombini is a still red wine made from Sangiovese grapes. On the nose, it reveals a well-defined bouquet, with aromas of ripe red fruit such as morello cherry and plum, interwoven with subtle spicy notes. The colour is a brilliant, intense ruby red. On the palate, it is broad and silky, supported by a dense tannic structure and a pronounced liveliness, which together provide a very persistent finish. Its elegant structure makes it perfect to pair with grilled red meats, braised game and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

This wine originates from the exclusive territory of Montalcino, an area historically linked to the Colombini family, who have owned estates here since 1352. The Fattoria dei Barbi has been producing the renowned Brunello di Montalcino since 1892. The vineyards stretch at 350 metres above sea level, enjoying a favourable exposure between south and south-west. These optimal environmental conditions ensure the regular ripening of the grapes, which are usually harvested in the second half of September, allowing the variety to express a perfect balance between finesse and concentration.

How it is produced

The production process begins with crushing and destemming, accompanied if necessary by a pre-fermentation cold cryomaceration in an inert atmosphere to optimise polyphenolic and aromatic extraction. The subsequent alcoholic fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature, concluding with malolactic fermentation. Ageing continues for at least two years in Slavonian oak barrels of various sizes, initially using small and medium-sized casks before moving on to large barrels. A final rest of at least four months ensures structural integration, defining the wine’s enveloping profile.

History and Curiosities

The prestigious Brunello from the Fattoria dei Barbi boasts a fascinating heritage, linked to the Colombini family and their estates in Montalcino since 1352. This iconic label, produced continuously since 1892, represents the historic soul of the Tuscan estate. Under the guidance of oenologist Maurizio Castelli, traditional practices are combined with cutting-edge technologies to optimise extraction and ensure exceptional quality. A centuries-old tribute to the authentic winemaking tradition of the region.

The Colombini family has owned land in Montalcino since 1352, and the Fattoria dei Barbi since the end of the 18th century. The property extends over 350 hectares of fields and vineyards in southern Tuscany, in Montalcino, Scansano and in Chianti. We have been producing Brunello since 1892 and were the first to export it to Europe, America and Asia. Since the 19th century, our wines have won prizes all over the world, and our blue label has always been the best known Brunello.

The Fattoria dei Barbi today is owned by Stefano Cinelli Colombini, who continues a story that sees the Colombinis linked to these lands for more than six centuries; a very long time in which the family has always defended the traditions and values of the Montalcinese culture, whose last and most precious fruit is Brunello.
