Description

Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is a red wine that falls within the Barolo Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin classification. It is produced in the Langhe area of Piedmont, a hilly region where the soils are characterized by alternating marl and stratified sand. Here, the Nebbiolo grape has been cultivated for a long time, but it was in the 19th century, thanks to the commitment of Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour and the last Marchioness of Barolo, that a wine of exceptional quality, Barolo, began to be produced. Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is produced on the Elio Grasso Farm in Monteforte d'Alba, on 18 hectares of vineyards within the UNESCO site of the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato wine landscape. The vineyards from which this Barolo originates face south, at an altitude of 300-350 meters, with medium-textured calcareous soils tending towards clay. The training system is Guyot, with a planting density of 4,500 vines per hectare. This wine is produced using exclusively Nebbiolo grapes, a native grape variety that produces the highest quality grapes. Harvesting takes place in the second ten days of October, strictly by hand. After pressing, the must is initially fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and then aged in Slavonian oak barrels. After bottling, the wine rests in the cellar for another 8-10 months. Aging must last a total of at least 38 months, 18 of which are in wooden barrels.

Tasting notes

Profumo

Perfume

An evocative olfactory spectrum that seems to recall sea and land elements: salty notes of seaweed and sea backwash combine with humus, cinchona, gentian and medicinal herbs. Balsamic puffs and hints of cigar box enhance ripe, crisp hints of plum and cherry.

Colore

Color

Bright garnet.

Gusto

Taste

Silky in the mouth, it unfolds slowly, revealing a vein and an intact texture with smooth and noble tannins. Long, savoury and balsamic finish that invites one to sip again.

The vineyards owned by the Grasso family are the estate’s greatest assets. The area where they are located has always been considered outstanding wine country, as is demonstrated by the inclusion of our holdings in the map of the finest vineyards drawn up by the great historian, Lorenzo Fantini, in the early 20th century.

In the early 1980s we decided to go back to our origins as grape growers, well aware that our work did not stop at the end of the row of vines. We had no illusions that we were inventing anything: we merely wanted to comply with the best in the traditions and work of our predecessors, without any preconceived ideas. The first logical consequence was the decision, from 1978, to vinify and bottle separately grapes from our various vineyards.
