Description

What type of wine it is

Coteaux Champenois Ambonnay Rouge Cuvée des Grands Côtes by Egly-Ouriet is a still red wine that expresses the authenticity of the Champagne terroir. Produced with Pinot Noir, it belongs to the Coteaux Champenois appellation. Its style is distinguished by being structured and complex, characterised by a deep and mineral profile. On the palate, it offers an elegant texture, with intense aromas of red fruits. As it is not subjected to filtration or fining and is bottled by hand, it keeps its purity intact, ensuring a strong ageing potential. Its refinement pairs magnificently with white meats and aged cheeses.

Where it comes from

This wine comes from Ambonnay, a famous Grand Cru in the Champagne region of France, with extensions also in the plots of Bouzy, Verzenay and Vrigny. The grapes come from old vines over forty years old. The ground is predominantly composed of chalky soils, which reflect sunlight during the day and release heat at night. This geological composition ensures optimal drainage and gives the wine a distinct minerality, decisively influencing the elegance and complexity of the final result.

How it is produced

Production follows the principles of organic and sustainable viticulture. After the harvest, vinification takes place with minimal intervention to respect the purity of the raw material. A crucial aspect is the total absence of fining and filtration, followed by manual bottling. This artisanal process preserves the natural characteristics of the Pinot Noir. Production is extremely limited, with only 2,700 bottles, allowing the wine to develop an extraordinary flavour complexity and to refine over time.

History and interesting facts

The Cuvée des Grands Côtes produced by Egly-Ouriet is a rare and fascinating expression of the renowned village of Ambonnay. This prestigious nectar is born from historic old Grand Cru vines that are over forty years old, deeply rooted in distinctive chalky soils. Artisan production is strictly limited to an exclusive release of only 2,700 bottles per year. Faithful to pure tradition, the wine is bottled entirely by hand, without any fining or filtration. This virtue ensures a fascinating longevity of over twenty years.

A Champagne that represents its terroir: the vine and soil are found throughout this wine, thanks to old vines, a few winemaker's secrets and modern technology. Egly-Ouriet produces champagne only with grapes from its 11.5 hectares company's vineyards, the most important of which are in Ambonnay, the home of Pinot Noir, the others in Bouzy, Verzenay and Vrigny. Quality begins on this particular soil, made up of layers of chalk that reflect the sun's rays and release heat to the vines at night, allowing excess water to be absorbed and giving the grapes a particularly mineral taste. To appreciate this red wine at its best, decanting for one hour is recommended. This wait prepares it to masterfully accompany mature cheeses. Its complex flavour profile, enriched by a deep minerality, pairs wonderfully with poultry and succulent pork dishes, thus creating a magnificent and balanced gastronomic combination.
