Description

Don Melchor from Concha y Toro Alto Maipo Valley represents one of the most famous and historic wines of Chilean wine production. An excellent wine from a young country that has managed to gain a high level of respectability in the international panorama of the production of extremely high-quality grapes with mastery and respect for tradition. The area of origin corresponds to the terroir of Puente Alto, inserted in the context of the Maipo Valley, an area of Chile at the foot of the Andes mountain range with a marked Mediterranean climate, characterized by alluvial soils and gently sloping hills. The soil formed by erosion by glaciers is extremely rich in minerals, gravel, clay, and pebbles that give Don Melchor the bold, robust character typical of this wine. The wine is a still red, classified as DO Maipo, made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes with a 3% Cabernet Franc. The entire harvest of the grapes is done by hand to ensure a higher level of selection and avoid accidentally damaging the bunches. The very pronounced temperature range, typical of the Andean area, creates conditions that encourage the tannins to mature slowly and evenly. These conditions allow for the exceptional concentration of aromas, the intensity of color, and the perfect natural acidity that distinguish the grapes. The vines that produce Don Melchor are at least 30 years old and represent the lineage of a selection of Cabernet Sauvignon vines, originally from the Bordeaux area and brought to Chile in the late 19th century.

Concha y Toro is the largest producer of wines from Latin America and is one of the global leaders in its field. It is headquartered in Santiago, Chile. The winery is located in Chile. It comprises 8,720 ha.spread throughout Chile's major wine regions: Maipo, Maule, Rapel, Colchagua, Curico, and Casablanca.

The Concha y Toro Vineyard was founded by Don Melchor de Santiago Concha y Toro and his wife, Emiliana Subercaseaux, in 1883. To start the winery, he brought grape varieties from the Bordeaux region in France. The grapes he brought were: Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon blanc, Semillon, Merlot, and Carmenère. The vineyard was incorporated as a stock company in 1923 and shares were sold in the Santiago stock market. Concha y Toro began exporting wine in March 1933 to the port of Rotterdam, Holland. In 1950, the winery began to acquire more vineyards and also began the process of adapting its business to new markets and meeting a higher demand.

In 1971, Eduardo Guilisasti Tagle became Chairman of the Board, who succeeded in expanding the company. In 1987, after partnering with U.S. importer Banfi Vintners, the company started to incorporate more advanced technology in all of its production stages. It also started using small French oak barriques. In 1994, shares of Viña Concha started trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

On December 7, 2002, Concha y Toro SA was awarded with top 100 Winter wine.

In 2012 for the second consecutive year, Concha y Toro was recognized as the “The Most Admired Wine Brand in the World” by Drinks International, which is concrete proof of the strong image that the company and the brand have forged in the International wine industry.
