Description
What type of wine it is
The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Montornello from Bibbiano is an organic red wine from the prestigious Chianti Classico Gran Selezione category, which reveals an intense ruby colour with garnet highlights in the glass. Fermented in concrete and aged in oak barrels, this wine faithfully expresses the character of Tuscan Sangiovese with a precise and defined style. The aromatic profile offers hints of cherry, black cherry, and ripe red fruits, which intertwine with notes of Mediterranean scrub, spices, and subtle nuances of forest floor. On the palate, it stands out for its elegant and tight structure, balanced by a lively freshness and well-integrated sweet tannins, closing with a savoury and persistent finish.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown in the Montornello vineyards in Castellina in Chianti, a territory where Bibbiano has operated for over a century and a half. The rows extend across north-east facing slopes, between 270 and 310 metres above sea level, benefiting from an ideal microclimate for cultivating Sangiovese. The soils feature a calcareous-clay matrix rich in alberese, sand layers, gypsum, and red clays. This specific geological composition gives the wine a marked freshness, supporting the intense fruity profile and clear flavour definition typical of this historic production area.
How it is produced
The production process begins with a careful manual harvest to select the best bunches, maintaining low yields. After soft pressing, fermentation takes place in concrete tanks for about thirty-two days, using techniques such as délestage and regular pump-overs to optimise phenolic extraction. The wine then rests for a maturation of twenty-four months, divided between concrete tanks and French oak barrels, thus defining its structural harmony. A further six months of ageing completes the work, resulting in a full-bodied red wine with great character.

On the edge of this immense natural and human heritage, since 1865 our family has continued the cultivation of vineyards and olive trees with passion, making it alive, modern and up-to-date thanks to an entrepreneurial tradition that has been handed down from father to son, and which has now reached the fifth generation, in the persons of Tommaso and Federico Marrocchesi Marzi.
Surrounded by vast olive groves of more than three thousand plants, the vineyards of Bibbiano extend over a total area of about 30 hectares between 270 and 310 metres above sea level, set on hill slopes that enjoy an enviable exposure and an excellent microclimate, characterised by clay deposits of the Pliocene age that are rich in limestone.
Our aim is to produce high quality wines, by virtue of a firm choice to exalt the genius loci of Bibbiano, namely the soul of the distinctive geography and the human heritage of the place, generating balanced, elegant wines with distinctive, and sometimes even powerful, personalities with very clear textures.
