What kind of wine it is
Château Clarke, signed by Baron Edmond de Rothschild, is a still red wine that represents an authentic expression of the Listrac-Médoc region. This blend combines Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to offer an intense aromatic profile. The ruby red colour with violet highlights anticipates aromas of ripe fruit, cedar, liquorice, cocoa and toasted almond. On the palate, it is rich, supported by a velvety tannic structure and a natural freshness that leads to an enveloping, spicy finish.
Where it comes from
The wine is produced in France, in the Bordeaux region, drawing strength from the typical clay-limestone soils of Listrac-Médoc. This particular soil composition encourages the development of a structured and balanced red. The vineyards, cultivated using the double Guyot system and with a high planting density, take root in a place steeped in history. The first vines were planted in the 12th century by Cistercian monks; the estate then passed to Tobie Clarke before finally coming under the expert guidance of Baron Edmond de Rothschild.
How it is produced
Vineyard care culminates in a meticulous manual harvest, with the grapes delivered into wooden vats. In the winery, a cold maceration is followed by fermentation at a controlled temperature, using stainless steel and oak barrels to calibrate the extraction of aromas. The wine then rests for a long maturation in barrels, both new and second-use, developing its structure. This precise winemaking technique defines a full-bodied flavour profile, ensuring an elegant and fruity persistence.
History and Curiosities
The origins of Château Clarke date back to the 12th century, when Cistercian monks from the Abbey of Vertheuil planted the first vines. In 1818, Chevalier Tobie Clarke purchased the land, giving it his name, before the estate came under the guidance of Baron Edmond de Rothschild in 1973. This illustrious heritage is reflected in the 2012 vintage, an authentic expression of the prestigious Listrac-Médoc AOC appellation. Thanks to the constant adherence to strict traditional winemaking practices, the wine expresses all the nobility and historical excellence of Bordeaux.

Under a watchful eye, the estates were restored, the vines were replanted and the company was modernised and expanded while retaining a familial aspect. Over time, Compagnie Vinicole Baron Edmond de Rothschild has opened up to the world through an association with the Rupert family in South Africa. Their shared passion gave rise to the "Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons" wine cellar at the foot of the magnificent Simonsberg Mountain.
In 1999, Compagnie Vinicole Baron Edmond de Rothschild bought 250 ha in Argentina at the base of the Andes to produce "Flechas de los Andes" wines with Mr Laurent Dassault.
In the Bordeaux region, Baron Benjamin de Rothschild acquired the superb property at Château des Laurets in 2003 seeking to develop the full potential of this vineyard straddling two AOCs: Puisseguin Saint-Émilion and Montagne Saint-Émilion. After significant renovation work, the estate now boasts modern, high-performance facilities.
More recently, in New Zealand, the acquisition of 26 ha of grapevines at the heart of the Marlborough valley has yielded Rimapere, an outstanding Sauvignon Blanc.
