Description

What kind of wine it is

San Leonardo is a still red wine that embodies the essence of the Trentino-Alto Adige region, within the Vigneti delle Dolomiti denomination. It is created from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère and Merlot, expressing a full, enveloping and elegant style. Its aromatic profile is distinguished by clear balsamic notes, accompanied by hints of wild berries, dark chocolate, tobacco and pepper. On the palate, the structure is supported by well-integrated silky tannins, enhanced by a pleasant freshness. The sip finishes with a mineral finish of extraordinary persistence, making it ideal for pairing with game roasts and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

This red originates in Borghetto all’Adige, in the province of Trento. The vineyards take root in limestone soils within a historic estate protected by the Alpine peaks. The area’s microclimate benefits from the meeting of cold currents from the Alps and the mild influences of nearby Lake Garda, ensuring optimal phenolic ripening. This particular pedoclimatic environment gives the wine a harmonious balance between power and finesse. Low yields per hectare guarantee excellent aromatic concentration, allowing the terroir to impart a pronounced sense of freshness to the palate.

How it is produced

Vinification follows a rigorous artisanal approach, starting with the manual harvesting of bunches at perfect ripeness. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation takes place thanks to indigenous yeasts in cement vats, where the wine rests for the first few months. Subsequently, the liquid matures in French oak barrels for a period of eighteen to twenty-four months, enriching and integrating its aromatic complexity. The process is completed with a long glass ageing of two years, an essential step to give this red its renowned structural harmony and remarkable longevity.

History and Curiosities

Originating from a historic estate dating back to 1724 and sheltered by the Alps, San Leonardo 2020 celebrates the excellence of the Bordeaux blend. Aged for a long time in French oak, this multi-award-winning red reveals elegant balsamic aromas, notes of wild berries and chocolate. On the palate, it offers a warm sip with great depth, wrapped in silky tannins and enhanced by an extraordinarily persistent mineral finish. An absolute masterpiece, perfect for special occasions.

More than 1000 years ago, it was a monastery, but for over three centuries now San Leonardo has served as the residence of the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga family, its proud custodians. Today, the San Leonardo estate is a garden of vineyards and roses, protected by the massive barrier of the Alps, which blunt the force of the cold northern winds while the valley floor benefits from, and in turn releases, warmth from nearby Lake Garda.

The tenuta remains an antique world, in which winemaking practices, still uncompromisingly artisanal, yield wines that are true gems of Italy’s wine tradition, marked by freshness, harmony, and an innate elegance.
