Description
What kind of spirit is this?
Tenjaku Whisky by Minami Alps distillery is a refined Japanese blended whisky crafted from a balanced composition of 84% grain and 16% malt. Aged in American white oak ex-Kentucky bourbon barrels, it offers a smooth and well-rounded profile. The nose reveals a faint smoky hint alongside sweet notes of pear and dried fruit. On the palate, its mellow texture unfolds with distinct flavours of banana, orange, and custard, leading to a finish defined by gentle spice and oak.
Geographical origin
This whisky is produced in Fuefuki, located in Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture. Set in the eastern Kofu basin and surrounded by the Chichibu and Misaka mountains, the distillery benefits from the region’s lush forests and proximity to Mount Fuji. A key element of its character is the pure groundwater drawn from 250 metres below the surface. Naturally filtered through porous volcanic rock, this slightly alkaline water source ensures a clean profile and imparts a characteristic velvety texture to the final blend.
How it is produced
The production process focuses on meticulous double distillation in copper pot stills, capturing the essence of the corn and barley mash. The spirit then undergoes a careful blending process, using sensory evaluation to harmonise the malt and grain whiskies perfectly. During its minimum 3-year maturation in American ex-bourbon oak barrels, the liquid develops a subtle sweetness that complements its structured body. Best served at 12–14 °C, this versatile whisky is ideal enjoyed neat, over ice, or prepared as a traditional mizuwari.
History and Heritage
Born in Fuefuki, Tenjaku Whisky is named after the skylark—a traditional Japanese herald of spring. Masterfully crafted by Master Blender Kenji Watanabe using double copper pot distillation, this exceptional spirit achieves its signature smoothness through the use of pristine volcanic groundwater drawn from deep within the Mount Fuji basin. Matured for at least three years in seasoned ex-bourbon oak barrels, the liquid develops a beautifully velvety texture, resulting in a perfectly harmonious Japanese blended whisky that balances gentle sweetness with delicate spice.
