Saying Marqués de Vargas in the wine world is naming four generations dedicated to the production and sales of excellent Rioja wines. The title of the Marqués de Vargas is held by a family closely linked to this important viticultural region in Spain.

It was in 1840 when Felipe de Mata, the eighth Marqués de Vargas, planted the first vines in the outskirts of Logroño.

Especially memorable was Hilario de la Mata, the father of the current Marqués de Vargas, who for years presided over one of the most emblematic wineries in Rioja.

In 1989, Pelayo de la Mata, the current Marqués de Vargas, realized his father’s dream by building a winery on the Estate Hacienda Pradolagar in Logroño.

Origin From the vineyards 'El Consul' (7 ha), 'La Misela' (3 ha) and 'Terrazas' (7 ha).
Climate Thanks to the excellent weather conditions, the vegetative cycle of our vines shows optimal development during the ripening process. The month of September was very important in ensuring good ripening, thanks to the day/night temperature difference, which is essential for the further ageing of the wine. 400 millimetres of rain fell, perfectly distributed over the months of the growing cycle. It was an ideal year for red grape varieties, to obtain wines with fine tannic structure and length.
Harvest Manually, in 15 kg crates from 10 to 14 October 2005.
Fermentation temperature 30 °C
Wine making Fermentation in 10,000 kg stainless steel tanks for 11 days at 30 °C. Maceration: daily pumping over to obtain fruit character and correct tannin extraction; 14 days in contact with the skins after fermentation.
Aging Treatment: no clarification or filtration. Ageing: once decanted, malolactic fermentation takes place partly in oak barrels. Barrels used: new Russian oak barrels (made by Seguin Moreau). Racking: the first 2 rackings every 4 months, then every 6 months. Total ageing: 23 months.
