Description

What kind of wine it is

The Krettnacher Ober Schaferhaus Spätlese by Hofgut Falkenstein is a still white wine from Germany, a pure expression of the Riesling grape variety. Belonging to the Prädikatswein category, it stands out for its juicy and vibrant flavour profile, able to balance a fine residual sweetness with a sharp acidity. In the glass, it appears straw yellow with greenish highlights, while on the nose it releases clear notes of white peach, lime and green apple. The palate offers great freshness and elegant harmony, finishing with a long and crystalline aftertaste.

Where it comes from

This Riesling originates from the Krettnacher Ober Schaferhaus vineyard, located in Germany in the Mosel region, more precisely in the Saar subzone. The unique microclimate imparts an unmistakable aromatic character, enhancing a profound slate minerality that supports the entire flavour structure. The area's renowned soils allow for taut and precise expressions, appreciated by international critics to the extent of earning 94 points from Robert Parker. The wine's identity is clearly reflected in the glass, telling a story of a solid and authentic connection to the land.

How it is produced

Production begins with a late harvest, a key element of the Spätlese style aimed at concentrating the aromas and sugars in the Riesling grapes. Under the careful guidance of Erich Weber, rigorous agronomic care focuses on achieving the optimal balance between natural softness and freshness. Capable of evolving beautifully over time thanks to an ageing potential of between five and ten years, this white wine is best enjoyed at a serving temperature of 10-12 °C. At the table, its vibrant savouriness makes it excellent with spicy Asian dishes, delicate freshwater fish recipes and creamy soft cheeses.

History and Curiosities

Originating from the Krettnacher Ober Schäferhaus vineyard, this late harvest Riesling reflects the artisanal mastery of Erich Weber for Hofgut Falkenstein. Through meticulous vineyard care, the renowned producer honours Saar traditions, offering a magnificent balance of residual sugars. Awarded 94 points by Robert Parker, this prestigious Mosel wine captivates the most discerning palates and guarantees an exceptional ageing potential of 5-10 years, providing a vibrant and unforgettable tasting experience over time.

From this winery
Erich Weber of Hofgut Falkenstein makes ultra-traditional, dry-tasting Saar Rieslings. He likes to call himself "Winzer Weber." (Winzer is German for winegrower.) In other words, the emphasis is on the work in his vineyards, where he spends most of his days. With his tan and rugged face, he looks the part, too. Since his middle son, Johannes, has joined him full-time, there has been more of a focus on Rieslings with residual sugar. In recent years, their wines have also caught the attention of critics, both in and outside Germany. Read more
